Albania Student Residence Permit in 2026

Foreign nationals studying at a public or private educational institution recognized by the Albanian state can use the student residence permit. Searches for an “Albania student visa” often combine two steps: a Type D visa when required for entry, and the residence permit that authorizes the longer stay.

Who qualifies?

Current Ministry of Interior guidance covers students, pupils, training and professional-practice activity at a recognized educational institution. Applicants need the standard residence documents plus evidence supporting the study purpose, accommodation and financial support.

Permit duration

The first student residence permit is issued for no more than one year. It can be extended in one-year increments until the school, studies or professional practice are completed.

Applicants should not assume the permit automatically extends beyond the underlying enrolment or training period.

Type D visa

Applicants whose nationality/category requires a long-stay visa must obtain the correct Type D visa before or as part of the residence process. Visa-exempt entry does not remove the need for a residence permit when the stay exceeds the lawful short-stay period.

Application process

Applications are filed online through the e-Albania residence-permit service. The general process includes uploading the documents and service-fee payment, electronic review, and—after approval—address registration, original-document delivery and biometric-card formalities.

The Interior Ministry says many residence applications receive an electronic provisional permit within five days after acceptance of the application.

Documents

The exact file depends on the study program, but the official framework centers on:

  • valid passport and relevant visa/entry evidence;
  • application form and recent photograph;
  • proof of enrolment/admission at a recognized institution;
  • suitable accommodation;
  • sufficient financial means;
  • health insurance where required; and
  • legalized/translated foreign documents.

Foreign documents generally need Albanian translation and the appropriate authentication/legalization.

Special nationality provisions

The current Interior Ministry service page notes that citizens of the United States, EU member states and Kosovo can receive a five-year first residence permit in covered categories, with a published service fee of 12,000 lek.

For students, the page also notes certain fee exemptions for Kosovo citizens and ethnic Albanian citizens of specified neighbouring states studying in Albania, although the biometric-card cost can still apply. Applicants should verify the live service text for their nationality.

Work rights

A student residence permit should not be treated as an unrestricted employment permit. If the student wants to take work, confirm the employment authorization that applies to the specific activity.

After graduation, Albania has a separate post-study provision: foreign students and researchers can remain on an appropriate residence basis for at least nine months to look for work or develop a business. That can create a bridge to the employed Unique Permit or self-employed permit, but the new activity must be regularized under the correct status.

Family members

Family members do not simply inherit student status. Where eligible, use the separate family reunification route and satisfy its relationship, support, housing and insurance requirements.

Tax residence

Studying in Albania can still have tax-residence implications. Albania's tax authority uses several tests, including more than 183 days of presence in a 365-day period. Immigration residence and tax residence are separate legal questions.
