Albania Digital Nomad Visa in 2026
Albania's official route for many foreign remote workers is the Unique Permit for Digital Mobile Workers. “Albania digital nomad visa” is the common search term, but the long-term authorization is a Unique Permit under Law No. 79/2021 on Foreigners rather than a tourist visa.
The route is designed for a foreign national who works remotely for an employer abroad or provides services to a contractor/client abroad and can perform the work without a fixed workplace in Albania using information-technology tools.
Who qualifies?
Current Ministry of Interior guidance says the digital mobile worker must be legally staying in Albania and provide a valid foreign employment contract or service contract with a contractor/client abroad showing that the work can be performed remotely.
The published requirements also include:
- proof of suitable accommodation in Albania;
- sufficient financial resources;
- a criminal-record certificate from the country of origin;
- health insurance valid for at least one year; and
- the standard passport, photograph and application documentation.
This route should not be used to disguise ordinary employment by an Albanian company. If the real employer is in Albania, see the Albania work permit guide.
Income or bank-deposit requirement
The current Interior Ministry service page provides two alternative ways to show sufficient resources for the applicant and dependants:
- an Albanian bank deposit of at least 300,000 lek per person for one calendar year; or
- proof of monthly income of at least 32,000 lek per person.
These are the figures currently published for this category. They are not equivalent to a tax exemption, a guaranteed approval threshold or a statement of recommended living costs.
If applying with dependants, the official wording is per person, so the financial evidence should reflect the people supported by the application.
Permit duration
The digital mobile worker Unique Permit is issued for up to one year on the first application under the current law and service guidance.
The service page also publishes a renewal fee, confirming that renewal is available when the legal conditions continue to be met. Applicants should re-check the live e-Albania service before renewal because documents and procedural details can change.
Government service fee
The current published Unique Permit service fee is:
| Application | Government service fee | |---|---:| | First digital-mobile-worker permit | 4,500 lek | | Renewal | 2,250 lek |
The biometric card, visa (when required), translations, legalization, insurance, banking and private-service costs can be separate. Do not treat a private agency package as the official government fee.
Do you need a Type D visa?
Not every applicant needs the same entry-visa step. For nationalities/categories that require a long-stay visa, the current procedure references the D/LD visa for digital mobile workers.
The Type D visa is an entry/long-stay instrument. The Unique Permit is the residence/work-status document that supports the remote-worker stay. Visa-exempt applicants for the relevant process can have the permit request handled directly by the competent border and migration authority.
Always check the current e-Visa portal for nationality-specific visa requirements before travel.
Application channel
Applications use the e-Albania Unique Permit service. The foreign national, employer where relevant, or an authorized person can submit through the online portal.
For the digital-mobile-worker category, the Interior Ministry says employment approval is not required. Where a Type D visa is required, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs examines that visa component.
Processing time
The current Unique Permit procedure states that examination and issuance takes 4 to 12 weeks from the application date.
Where the Type D visa stage applies, the official page says the visa assessment normally takes no more than 15 days after acceptance, with an exceptional extension to 30 days by reasoned decision.
These are administrative targets, not guarantees. Missing translations, legalization issues, incomplete contracts, background checks or category questions can extend the practical timeline.
Typical document set
The current official list includes or implies:
- valid passport/travel document and relevant pages/stamps;
- Type D visa evidence when the applicant's nationality/category requires it;
- application form;
- recent photograph;
- proof of suitable accommodation in Albania;
- valid foreign employment contract or foreign service contract;
- bank-deposit or monthly-income evidence meeting the published test;
- criminal-record certificate; and
- health-insurance policy valid for at least one year.
Foreign-issued documents generally need Albanian translation and authentication/legalization according to the applicable international rules. The Interior Ministry repeatedly states that foreign-origin documents used in permit files should generally have been issued within the preceding six months.
What happens after online approval?
The common residence/Unique Permit procedure includes post-approval identity and residence formalities. Applicants may need to:
- confirm the Albanian residential address with the civil-status office within the stated period;
- pay the biometric residence-card value using the instructions sent by the regional migration office;
- send original documents and the generated/signed application form to the regional migration office; and
- appear personally for fingerprints/biometrics and any other required formalities.
The Interior Ministry procedure then provides for collection of the biometric residence card after notification.
Can you work for Albanian clients?
The official digital-mobile-worker definition is centered on an employer, contractor or client based abroad. That is materially different from ordinary Albanian employment or building a locally based self-employed business.
If your commercial activity shifts toward Albanian customers, a local company, or a business operated from Albania, review the self-employment Unique Permit and local business/tax requirements rather than assuming the remote-worker category still fits.
Family members
Dependants are relevant to the published financial test, but family immigration rights should be handled through the appropriate family-residence rules. Albania has a separate family reunification residence permit.
Do not assume that a spouse or dependant automatically receives the same independent work authorization as the principal remote worker. A family member who wants to work should confirm the applicable employment/permit rules for that person's situation.
Tax residence and remote work
The permit is not a tax exemption. Albania's General Directorate of Taxation states that an individual can become tax resident under several tests, including spending more than 183 days in Albania during a 365-day period or having a residence in Albania under the Civil Code.
A person who becomes Albanian tax resident can face Albanian tax obligations on worldwide income. Remote workers should also consider whether their work structure creates local registration, social-security, permanent-establishment or business obligations. Those questions are separate from immigration eligibility.
US, EU and Kosovo nationals
The Interior Ministry's current service page repeatedly notes that US citizens, EU member-state citizens and Kosovo citizens, when applying for the first time, can receive a residence permit with a five-year validity and a published service fee of 12,000 lek in covered categories.
Because the digital-mobile-worker section itself also displays this note, eligible nationals should review the live service instructions for how that nationality rule interacts with the route-specific conditions. Do not assume it removes the need to show the remote foreign work relationship, accommodation or other eligibility evidence.
Digital nomad vs self-employed route
Choose the legal basis according to the real activity:
- Digital mobile worker: the work relationship or client/contractor is abroad and the work is performed remotely using IT.
- Self-employed Unique Permit: the applicant plans a business activity with economic interest and expected positive impact in Albania.
- Employed Unique Permit: the applicant takes a job with an Albanian employer.
Using the wrong category can create immigration, tax and business-registration problems later.
Common mistakes
- relying on tourist or visa-free status for a long-term remote-working stay;
- presenting an Albanian employment contract under the remote-worker route;
- confusing the 32,000 lek monthly financial-evidence threshold with a tax exemption or guaranteed approval;
- forgetting that the 300,000 lek bank alternative is stated per person;
- submitting a foreign contract that does not show the foreign employer/client relationship clearly;
- overlooking criminal-record, insurance and accommodation evidence;
- assuming the Type D visa is the same thing as the Unique Permit; and
- ignoring Albanian tax-residence rules after a long stay.
