Bahrain Student Residence in 2026
Bahrain's NPRA provides a dedicated residence route for students enrolled with qualifying universities and institutes. It has a separate entry-visa stage and residence-permit stage, and it does not automatically give the student permission to work.
Who is the route for?
The route is for a foreign student enrolled with a local or international university/institute covered by Bahrain's education-residence framework. The educational institution or authorized sponsor is central to the application and must provide the official enrollment/support letter required by NPRA.
Validity
NPRA's current residence service states:
- 5 years for students enrolled with local universities/institutes; and
- 1 year for students enrolled with international universities/institutes.
The student's actual lawful stay still depends on continuing enrollment and meeting renewal conditions. Do not assume a five-year document remains valid after the qualifying education basis ends.
Entry visa before residence
NPRA also has a student entry-visa service for students joining local or international universities/institutes. The current page publishes a 3-working-day service period and requires an official letter from the university or institute.
Current entry-visa fees are:
- BHD 5 application fee;
- BHD 5 visa endorsement fee; and
- BHD 30 visa issuance fee.
The entry visa is valid for use within three months of issuance according to the current NPRA service note.
Residence-permit fees
For the student residence stage, NPRA currently lists:

The current residence service publishes a five-minute transaction time for the relevant service channel once the application is at that stage. That should not be confused with the total time needed for admission, entry, document preparation and residence completion.
Documents
Current NPRA guidance for the student route includes:
- passport valid for more than six months;
- applicant/authorized representative identity documents where applicable;
- official university or institute letter confirming enrollment; and
- for renewal, a renewal letter from the educational institution stating the required residence period.
NPRA can request additional documents.
Presence in Bahrain
The residence-permit service states that the applicant must be inside Bahrain when the residence application is made. The entry-visa service is used for the admission/entry stage where relevant.
Plan the sequence with the educational institution rather than filing the residence stage prematurely from abroad.
Can a student work in Bahrain?
NPRA's student-residence page says holders are not permitted to work, paid or unpaid, unless a permit is issued by the competent authority.
That means a student should not assume that part-time work is automatically lawful. Any employment must be checked against LMRA and the relevant education/immigration conditions. See Bahrain work permit.
Renewal
Renewal requires continued qualifying study and updated institutional evidence. The current NPRA page asks for a renewal letter from the educational institution and says the student must be physically resident in Bahrain for renewal applications.
Because the permit is linked to education, students should start renewal planning before the existing permit expires and coordinate with the institution's immigration/student-services team.
Family members
Student status does not create a universal right to sponsor relatives. Bahrain has specific family-joining services depending on the sponsor and relationship. Common mistakes
- Treating the admission letter as if it were already a residence permit.
- Starting paid or unpaid work without competent-authority permission.
- Confusing the 3-working-day entry-visa service period with the full university/residence process.
- Assuming the five-year residence wording applies to every institution category.
- Letting the education basis end without checking the effect on immigration status.
Application sequence
- Secure admission to a qualifying Bahrain university or institute.
- Obtain the institution's official student letter.
- Use the student entry-visa process if required for entry.
- Enter Bahrain lawfully under the approved basis.
- Complete the residence-permit application while inside Bahrain.
- Pay the BHD 5 application fee and BHD 60 residence issuance fee.
- Maintain enrollment and apply for renewal with updated institutional evidence.
- Obtain separate authorization before undertaking any work.
