Bahrain Investor Residence in 2026
Bahrain's investor self-sponsorship residence is an NPRA residence route for a foreign investor with a substantial ownership interest in a qualifying Bahrain company. It is not the same as incorporating a company, and it is not the same as Bahrain's Golden Residency.
Core eligibility
NPRA's current investor self-sponsorship service requires documentary proof that the applicant is a partner or owner of a company in a qualifying industrial, commercial, tourism, medical, education, training or other accepted sector, with the applicant's share worth at least BHD 100,000.
The applicant must also show a lawful and stable source of income of at least BHD 500 sufficient for the applicant and dependants.
The BHD 100,000 threshold relates to the applicant's qualifying company share for this residence service. It should not be replaced with a company's nominal capital figure from a generic incorporation package.
Validity
NPRA states that self-sponsorship residence for foreign investors can be issued or renewed for:
- 2 years;
- 5 years; or
- 10 years.
This is a renewable fixed-term residence route. It is distinct from Bahrain Golden Residency, which the official Golden Residency program describes as permanent residence.
Government fees
Current NPRA fees are:
| Item | Fee | |---|---:| | Application | BHD 5, non-refundable | | 2-year residence | BHD 200 | | 5-year residence | BHD 400 | | 10-year residence | BHD 600 | | Visa conversion, where applicable | BHD 250 |
NPRA says payment must be completed within 30 days after approval or the application is automatically cancelled.
Published processing time
NPRA lists 40 working days for the service. Treat this as the published service period, not an unconditional guarantee; the authority reserves the right to request additional documents or information.
Documents
Current NPRA guidance lists evidence including:
- passport valid for more than six months;
- certificate of good conduct;
- lease contract and electricity bill;
- certified memorandum/articles of the company showing the applicant's ownership/partnership and the BHD 100,000 minimum share;
- valid Bahrain-issued health-insurance certificate;
- evidence of lawful stable income of at least BHD 500;
- commercial registration (CR);
- applicant's bank statements for the previous three months; and
- company bank statements for the previous three months.
NPRA can request further evidence.
Company registration is a separate process
The immigration threshold does not create the company for you. Bahrain's Ministry of Industry and Commerce uses SIJILAT for commercial registration and activity licensing. Foreign investors can own 100% of companies in many business activities, but activity-specific restrictions and approvals still apply.
That means there are at least two separate questions:
- Can the business legally exist and conduct its activity? — MOIC/SIJILAT and any sector regulator.
- Does the individual qualify for investor self-sponsorship residence? — NPRA.
A cheap company-formation package does not automatically satisfy the BHD 100,000 investor-residence share requirement.
Does investor residence authorize employment?
Do not treat this residence card as a universal work permit. If the investor will take employment or perform activity requiring LMRA authorization, check the Bahrain work permit rules. If the person will operate a business, the company and activity must also hold the required commercial licences.
Family members
NPRA maintains family-joining residence services, and self-sponsored residents may have family options depending on relationship and the sponsor's status. The exact route and fees vary by family category. See Bahrain family residence rather than assuming family members are automatically included in the investor permit.
Investor residence vs Golden Residency
| Question | Investor self-sponsorship | Golden Residency | |---|---|---| | Main basis | Company ownership/share | Professional, property, retiree or talent category | | Company share threshold | At least BHD 100,000 | No general company-share category published as the standard Golden route | | Income | At least BHD 500 lawful stable income | Category-specific Golden criteria | | Duration | 2, 5 or 10 years | Officially described as permanent residence | | Core fee | BHD 200/400/600 plus BHD 5 application | BHD 300 once every 10 years plus BHD 5 application | | Business registration | Separate MOIC/SIJILAT process | Separate MOIC/SIJILAT process |
Entrepreneurs with strong achievements may also be considered under the talented individual category of Golden Residency, but that is a discretionary evidence-based Golden category—not a substitute name for ordinary investor self-sponsorship.
Application sequence
- Establish or hold the qualifying Bahrain company interest lawfully.
- Make sure the commercial registration and required licences are valid.
- Confirm the applicant's share satisfies the BHD 100,000 NPRA rule.
- Prepare good-conduct, housing, insurance, bank and income evidence.
- Apply through Bahrain's official eGovernment channel for NPRA self-sponsorship.
- Pay the BHD 5 application fee and later the appropriate residence fee if approved.
- Complete visa conversion only where it applies to the case.
- Arrange family and any work authorization separately.
