Bahrain Golden Residency in 2026
Bahrain's Golden Residency is the Kingdom's official long-term permanent-residence program for qualifying professionals, property owners, retirees and talented individuals. It is materially different from Bahrain's ordinary 2-, 5- and 10-year self-sponsorship residence permits.
The official Golden Residency portal describes the status as permanent residency and says there is no minimum stay requirement to keep it valid. NPRA currently charges an administrative residence fee once every 10 years, so applicants should distinguish the program's permanent-residence character from the administrative cycle attached to the residence document/fee.
Who qualifies?
Professionals working in Bahrain
The official 2026 criteria require a professional to have:
- worked in Bahrain for at least five years;
- earned an average monthly basic salary over BHD 2,000 during the preceding five years; and
- been continuously insured by Bahrain's Social Insurance Organization (SIO) for that amount throughout the relevant five-year period.
Only basic salary counts for this criterion. The official portal expressly excludes bonuses, allowances and other additional benefits from the salary calculation.
This category is therefore not a route for a newly arrived employee who has just received a BHD 2,000 salary offer.
Property owners
A property owner can qualify where the applicant's personal share value in Bahrain real estate is BHD 130,000 or more at the time of purchase. The threshold can be met with one property or multiple properties, provided the total value of the applicant's own qualifying shares reaches at least BHD 130,000.
This threshold is higher than the BHD 50,000 value used for Bahrain's ordinary property-owner self-sponsorship residence. Do not confuse the two routes.
Resident retirees
The official Golden Residency criteria describe resident retirees as people who:
- worked in Bahrain for at least 15 years; and
- receive an average pension of BHD 2,000 or more.
Non-resident retirees
A retired person who does not reside in Bahrain can qualify under the published criterion of an average pension of BHD 4,000 or more.
For people who do not meet those Golden Residency pension levels, Bahrain also has an ordinary retiree self-sponsorship residence with different requirements.
Talented individuals
The official program includes a talent route subject to evidence and review. Published examples include:
- entrepreneurs;
- researchers and scientists;
- academics;
- athletes;
- inventors;
- artists; and
- internationally recognized authors and comparable talent categories.
There is no responsible way to convert those categories into a guaranteed points score unless the competent authority publishes one. Applicants should prepare strong documentary proof of the claimed talent and achievements.
Fees
Current NPRA service pages list:
- BHD 5 non-refundable application fee; and
- BHD 300 Golden Residency administrative fee, collected once every 10 years.
The official Golden Residency FAQ says dependants sponsored under the program are charged the same BHD 5 application fee plus BHD 300 residence issuance fee each.
Processing time
Current NPRA service pages publish:
- 5 working days for qualifying property-owner cases;
- 5 working days for qualifying employed/retired Bahrain-resident cases;
- 5 working days for non-resident retiree cases; and
- 10 working days for talented-individual cases.
These are official service periods, not a guarantee that every complex application will be finalized on that exact day. NPRA can request additional documents or information.
Core documents
The precise set varies by category, but current official pages commonly require:
- passport valid for more than six months;
- Bahrain-valid health insurance;
- six months of bank statements;
- previous Bahrain residence evidence where applicable; and
- category-specific evidence such as salary/SIO history, pension proof, qualifying property title deeds or talent credentials.
NPRA reserves the right to request additional information.
Can you apply from outside Bahrain?
Yes, for categories that do not require an existing Bahrain-resident profile. The official FAQ says non-residents can use Golden Residency services that do not require eKey login, while Bahrain residents can apply using eKey 2.0 where relevant.
Family inclusion
Golden Residency holders can sponsor their:
- spouse;
- parents; and
- children.
This is broader than the standard LMRA employee-family rule. See Bahrain family residence for the distinctions.
Can a Golden Residency holder work?
Not without the relevant LMRA work permit. Bahrain's official Golden Residency FAQ says Golden Residency permits a person to reside in Bahrain and explore employment opportunities, but a work permit from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority is still required to work.
The official FAQ also says obtaining Golden Residency does not terminate an active work visa/work permit. An existing permit can continue to expiry and then must be renewed through the applicable LMRA process.
See Bahrain work permit.
Can you establish a business?
The program advertises ease of setting up a business and Bahrain allows 100% foreign ownership in many sectors. However, Golden Residency is not itself a commercial licence. Business owners must still use the Ministry of Industry and Commerce/SIJILAT process and obtain any activity-specific approvals.
Likewise, an ordinary investor self-sponsorship residence is a separate immigration route with a BHD 100,000 company-share threshold and should not be called the Golden Residency investor category.
No minimum stay requirement
The official Golden Residency FAQ states that there is no minimum stay requirement in Bahrain to maintain the validity of Golden Residency. That can be useful for internationally mobile residents, but it does not decide tax residence in Bahrain or elsewhere.
Tax point
Bahrain's official Golden Residency material refers to a 0% income-tax environment, and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce likewise describes 0% personal income tax. Residence status can still interact with VAT, business taxes, social insurance and tax obligations in other countries. Immigration residence and tax residence should be analyzed separately.
Application checklist
- Match yourself to one published eligibility category.
- Verify the threshold using current official material immediately before applying.
- Collect passport, insurance, bank and category-specific evidence.
- Apply through Bahrain's official government/Golden Residency channel.
- Pay the BHD 5 application fee.
- Respond to any NPRA evidence request.
- If approved, complete the BHD 300 administrative residence payment within the official deadline.
- If you will work, arrange the separate LMRA work permit.
- Add eligible dependants through the Golden Residency family process if required.
