Bahrain Retiree Residence in 2026

Bahrain has two materially different residence paths relevant to retirees: an ordinary retiree self-sponsorship residence for 2, 5 or 10 years, and Golden Residency for retirees who meet higher published pension/history thresholds.

This page covers the ordinary NPRA self-sponsorship route first, then explains when Golden Residency may be a stronger alternative.

Ordinary retiree self-sponsorship eligibility

NPRA's current service page asks for evidence including:

  • proof of retirement from the government or private sector, or in a GCC-country context, with at least 15 years of service reflected in the required retirement/service evidence;
  • a lawful and stable source of income of at least BHD 500 sufficient for the applicant and dependants;
  • Bahrain-valid health insurance; and
  • the other identity, housing, good-conduct and financial documents required by NPRA.

The wording of the official service is tied to retirement/service evidence, not merely reaching a particular age. Applicants should not assume that age alone qualifies them.

Validity

NPRA issues/renews the self-sponsorship route for:

  • 2 years;
  • 5 years; or
  • 10 years.

Government fees

| Item | Fee | |---|---:| | Application | BHD 5, non-refundable | | 2-year residence | BHD 200 | | 5-year residence | BHD 400 | | 10-year residence | BHD 600 | | Visa conversion, where applicable | BHD 250 |

NPRA requires payment within 30 days after approval.

Processing time

The published service period is 40 working days. The authority may request additional evidence, so an individual case can take longer.

Documents

Current NPRA guidance lists:

  • passport valid for more than six months;
  • certificate of good conduct;
  • lease contract and electricity bill;
  • proof of qualifying retirement/service of at least 15 years;
  • Bahrain-issued valid health-insurance certificate;
  • evidence of lawful stable income of at least BHD 500;
  • Social Insurance Organization/service record where applicable; and
  • applicant bank statements for the previous three months.

Golden Residency for retirees

Retirees with higher pension levels should compare the permanent-residence program.

Resident retiree Golden Residency

The official Golden Residency criteria state that a resident retiree should have:

  • worked in Bahrain for at least 15 years; and
  • an average pension of BHD 2,000 or more.

Non-resident retiree Golden Residency

A retiree who is not resident in Bahrain can qualify under the published average pension of BHD 4,000 or more criterion.

Golden Residency is officially described as permanent residence, has no minimum stay requirement according to the program FAQ, and carries a BHD 300 administrative residence fee once every 10 years plus a BHD 5 application fee.

Which retirement route is relevant?

| Feature | Ordinary retiree self-sponsorship | Golden Residency retiree | |---|---|---| | Income/pension | At least BHD 500 stable lawful income | Resident retiree: BHD 2,000+ average pension; non-resident: BHD 4,000+ average pension | | History | NPRA asks for retirement/service evidence of at least 15 years | Resident Golden retiree: at least 15 years working in Bahrain | | Status | 2, 5 or 10 years | Officially described as permanent residence | | Published processing | 40 working days | 5 working days on current NPRA retiree Golden service pages | | Family | Separate relevant family process | Spouse, parents and children can be sponsored under Golden Residency rules |

Can a retiree work?

The ordinary retiree self-sponsorship route should be treated as a residence basis, not as an employment permit. If the applicant later takes employment, check the competent authority's authorization requirements and Bahrain work permit.

Golden Residency also does not remove the LMRA work-permit requirement for employment.

Family planning

A retiree should budget separately for dependant applications and health insurance. The applicable family process depends on whether the sponsor holds ordinary self-sponsorship or Golden Residency. See Bahrain family residence.

Retirement and tax residence

Bahrain's official business/Golden Residency material refers to 0% personal income tax, but immigration permission does not by itself end tax residence in another country. Retirees with pensions, investments, rental income or company interests abroad should analyze source-country rules and any continuing tax-residence ties separately.

Application checklist

  1. Confirm that your retirement/service history matches the NPRA ordinary route.
  2. Compare your pension against the Golden Residency BHD 2,000/BHD 4,000 criteria.
  3. Obtain retirement/service evidence and any SIO record required for the case.
  4. Prepare good-conduct, housing, insurance, bank and income documents.
  5. Apply through the official Bahrain eGovernment/NPRA channel.
  6. Pay the correct residence fee only after the application stage requires it.
  7. Apply separately for eligible family members.
