Bahrain Family Residence in 2026

Bahrain family residence depends on the principal sponsor's status. The rules for an expatriate employee are different from those for a Golden Residency holder or for a self-sponsored resident.

Employee sponsorship: spouse and dependants up to age 24

LMRA states that an employer can apply through the Expatriate Management System for the expatriate worker's spouse and dependants up to age 24 when the worker earns at least BHD 400 per month.

The BHD 400 threshold belongs to this ordinary employee-family framework. It is not a universal threshold for every relative.

Parents and children over 24

NPRA has a separate route for a foreign resident's father, mother and children over age 24. Current NPRA guidance requires sponsor income of at least BHD 1,000 per month.

For a qualifying relative outside Bahrain, the current NPRA entry service lists a 3-working-day processing period and these fees:

  • BHD 5 application fee;
  • BHD 5 visa endorsement fee; and
  • BHD 30 visa issuance fee.

For the residence-permit stage inside Bahrain, NPRA lists BHD 5 to apply, BHD 50 for issuance and BHD 60 for renewal.

Golden Residency family members

The official Golden Residency FAQ says a Golden Residency holder can sponsor:

  • spouse;
  • parents; and
  • children.

It lists a BHD 5 application fee and BHD 300 residence issuance fee for each dependant. See Bahrain Golden Residency.

Can a family member work?

Family residence does not automatically authorize employment. NPRA's family-residence guidance says holders may not engage in paid or unpaid work unless the competent authority issues the required permit.

A family member taking employment should therefore check the Bahrain work permit rules and obtain any required LMRA authorization before starting work.

Documents

The exact set depends on the relationship and sponsor, but current official services commonly require:

  • passport valid for more than six months;
  • sponsor identity/residence evidence;
  • certified or attested marriage certificate for a spouse;
  • certified birth certificate or other relationship evidence for children/parents;
  • sponsor salary or income evidence;
  • Bahrain-valid health insurance where required;
  • sponsor housing/address evidence; and
  • employer support/no-objection evidence where the relevant service requests it.

NPRA can ask for additional documents.

Inside-Bahrain and outside-Bahrain stages

NPRA separates the family entry visa from the residence permit in categories such as first-degree relatives of foreign residents. The entry-visa page requires the family member to be outside Bahrain at the application stage, while the residence service requires the applicant to be inside Bahrain.

Plan travel only after confirming which stage applies to the person.

Self-sponsored residents

Investors, property owners and retirees with personal sponsorship should use the family-joining service that corresponds to the principal residence. A dependant is not automatically added just because the main applicant receives self-sponsorship.

  1. Applying the BHD 400 employee-family threshold to parents or adult children who fall under the BHD 1,000 NPRA category.
  2. Assuming a dependant residence is also a work permit.
  3. Ignoring the age-24 boundary in LMRA's employee-family rule.
  4. Using uncertified civil-status documents when the NPRA service requires certification/attestation.
  5. Applying at the wrong inside/outside-Bahrain stage.

Practical sequence

  1. Identify the principal sponsor's exact residence/work status.
  2. Match each relative to the correct family category.
  3. Check the applicable sponsor-income threshold.
  4. Prepare relationship evidence and health insurance.
  5. Use LMRA/EMS or NPRA/eGovernment according to the route.
  6. Complete the correct entry-visa and residence stages.
  7. Obtain separate work authorization before a dependant starts work.
