Angola Student Visa in 2026

Angola's student visa is the long-stay visa for a foreign national admitted to qualifying study, training or an educational program in Angola. It is distinct from tourism, temporary scientific research and employment.

The current framework gives students a renewable study status but does not turn the student visa into ordinary residence or unrestricted work authorization.

Who is the student visa for?

The visa is intended for a person who has a genuine educational or professional-training basis in Angola and can document admission/enrollment through the appropriate institution.

Scientific research, mobility and university-extension activity may instead fall under the temporary stay visa, depending on the actual purpose. Choose the legal category that matches what the person will really do in Angola.

Documents

The exact mission checklist can vary, but the foreign-citizens law and implementing regulation require the general long-duration evidence plus study-specific documents. A compliant file commonly includes:

  • completed visa application;
  • valid passport and photographs;
  • admission, enrollment or training evidence from a recognized institution;
  • criminal-record certificate;
  • medical certificate;
  • proof of means of subsistence;
  • accommodation evidence where required;
  • commitment to respect Angolan law;
  • proof of travel/other mission-specific items where requested; and
  • proof of payment.

Scholarships can be relevant evidence of means of subsistence under the implementing regulation. A qualifying host or program can also support the subsistence evidence through the mechanisms recognized by the regulation.

Validity

The foreign-citizens law gives the student visa multiple entry and validity of up to one year. It can be renewed annually until the studies finish, provided the student continues to satisfy the legal basis.

A student should maintain enrollment and preserve institutional evidence for renewal rather than waiting until the visa is about to expire.

Processing time

Presidential Decree 163/20 states that a student visa should be granted within 30 working days from receipt of the application.

The regulation gives a 10-working-day period for a student-visa extension application. Renewal evidence includes documentation from the recognized educational/training institution confirming that studies continue and, where relevant, company documentation confirming continuation of an internship or voluntary work.

These are decision periods and do not include all time needed for admission, document authentication, appointment scheduling or corrections to an incomplete file.

Can students work in Angola?

Ordinary remunerated work is not authorized by the student visa. The foreign-citizens law expressly says the student visa does not allow remunerated activity, except for an internship related to the training.

A student offered a normal employment role should not simply start working. Angola's implementing regulation contains a formal process to transform a student visa into a work visa when the statutory requirements are met.

Student-to-work transformation

Presidential Decree 163/20 allows a student-visa holder who intends to take subordinate employment to request transformation to a work visa. The regulation identifies evidence such as:

  • employer request confirming the job;
  • employment contract or promised contract;
  • competent sector authority's opinion;
  • Angolan criminal-record certificate;
  • study declaration from the recognized institution; and
  • proof of the applicable fee.

The regulation states that the work visa resulting from this transformation should be granted within 30 working days from the request.

This is a legal conversion procedure, not an automatic post-study work permit.

Does a student visa grant residence?

No. The foreign-citizens law states that the student visa does not grant residence.

Students whose long-term objective is settlement should therefore distinguish years spent on a student visa from years holding temporary residence authorization. The current permanent-residence rule is tied to 10 consecutive years of temporary residence, not simply any lawful stay.

See the Angola residence visa guide for the residence framework.

Family members

Angola's temporary-stay law includes a ground for family accompanying a qualifying student-visa holder. The family member needs their own documented immigration status; they are not automatically converted into students or residents.

See Angola family residence options for dependent planning and work-right cautions.

Fees

Official diplomatic/consular missions publish their local schedules. Current official mission material can quote a local student-visa price, but those mission-specific amounts should not be treated as one immutable worldwide tariff.

Confirm the live fee, currency, payment method and legalization requirements with the Angolan mission responsible for your jurisdiction before filing.

Study visa versus research visa

Use the actual activity to distinguish routes:

  • Student visa: admission to study/training; one-year validity; ordinary paid work prohibited except training-related internship.
  • Temporary stay for research: qualifying scientific research, mobility or university-extension activity; different statutory ground and potentially different work-right treatment.

A doctoral candidate, visiting researcher or academic should confirm whether their host and activity are treated as study or research before building the file.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an Angola student visa valid?

Up to one year, renewable annually until the studies finish.

How long does the application take?

The implementing regulation gives a 30-working-day decision period for the student visa.

Can an international student work in Angola?

The student visa does not permit ordinary remunerated activity. The law allows an internship connected to the student's training.

Can I change from student to work status?

Yes, the implementing regulation provides a formal student-to-work visa transformation when the employment conditions and required documents are satisfied.

Does studying count as temporary residence for permanent residence?

Do not assume so. The student visa itself does not grant residence, while the permanent-residence rule is based on consecutive years of temporary residence authorization.
