Angola Visa and Residence Options in 2026
Angola uses a purpose-specific immigration system. A tourist entry, visa exemption, work visa, investor visa, student visa and residence authorization are not interchangeable. The correct route depends on whether you are being hired by an Angolan employer, investing through a registered private-investment project, settling permanently, conducting research or another temporary activity, joining family, or studying.
This guide was checked against Angola's current foreign-citizens framework, its implementing regulation, official diplomatic/consular guidance, the current non-resident foreign-worker framework and government investment information on 15 September 2026.

Tourist exemption is not immigration permission
Angola currently exempts citizens of 98 countries from a tourism visa under the government's 2023 measure, allowing tourism stays of up to 30 days per entry and 90 days per year for covered nationals. The Government of Angola expressly says the exemption applies only to tourism. Employment, study, medical treatment and residence require the corresponding immigration permission.
That distinction matters for remote workers. ReloTide did not identify a dedicated Angolan “digital nomad visa” in the current immigration categories reviewed for this guide. A tourism exemption should not be repackaged as remote-work authorization. Likewise, the current framework reviewed here does not create a stand-alone “retirement visa.” Someone seeking to settle without a work or investor basis must assess the actual residence rules rather than relying on a marketing label.
Angola work visa
The work visa is for a foreign national entering Angola to perform remunerated professional activity. Under the current foreign-citizens law it can be valid for up to 365 days and is renewable annually until the employment contract ends. It is tied to the professional activity and employer that justified the visa.
The implementing regulation states a 30-working-day grant period from receipt of the application. It also requires supporting evidence such as the employment documentation, sectoral opinion and professional qualifications, and contains labour-market and repatriation-guarantee rules.
Current labour planning must also account for Presidential Decree 49/25 of 18 February 2025, which regulates the professional activity of non-resident foreign workers. See the Angola work visa guide.
Crucially, the foreign-citizens law says a work visa does not grant residence. A worker should not assume years on a work visa automatically count as years holding a temporary residence authorization.
Investor visa
Angola's investor visa is a territorial visa for a foreign investor, or qualifying representative/proxy of an investor company, tied to a private investment registered with the competent investment authority. The visa permits multiple entries and can be issued for up to two years, renewable for equal periods.
The implementing regulation requires proof of the investment registration and gives a 30-working-day decision period. Other foreign employees hired by the investing enterprise use ordinary work-visa rules; the investor visa is not a substitute employment visa for all foreign staff.
The migration law provides a significant residence bridge for the actual investor: after three uninterrupted years on the investor visa, the investor may be granted temporary residence if the competent private-investment authority confirms that the project remains valid. That special rule does not extend in the same way to a representative or proxy.
The migration sources reviewed do not establish one universal visa-specific minimum investment amount for every investor-visa file. The project must satisfy Angola's private-investment regime and registration process. See the Angola investor visa guide and entrepreneur visa hub.
Residence visa and residence permit
The residence visa is the entry route specifically designed for a foreign national who intends to settle in Angola. The law gives the residence visa multiple-entry validity with a 90-day stay, and the implementing regulation states a 60-working-day decision period.
After entering Angola on the residence visa, the implementing regulation requires the holder to request a temporary residence authorization within 30 days. Temporary residence is valid for two years and can be renewed for equal periods.
Permanent residence is a later status. Current law provides for permanent residence after 10 consecutive years of temporary residence. Permanent residence itself does not have a fixed validity limit, although the physical residence title is renewed every five years.
Read the Angola residence visa and residence permit guide for the distinction between the entry visa, temporary residence and permanent residence.
Temporary stay visa
Angola's temporary stay visa covers several legally defined grounds rather than one generic long-stay category. These include religious mission or NGO activity, scientific research and mobility/university-extension activities, accompanying qualifying visa holders, family of a valid residence-permit holder, and the spouse of an Angolan citizen, among other defined circumstances.
It is generally multiple-entry, valid for 365 days and renewable annually while the underlying reason continues. The implementing regulation gives a 30-working-day initial decision period and a five-working-day extension period.
Some temporary-stay grounds can permit remunerated activity under the foreign-citizens law; others are principally family or mission/research permissions. Conversion to residence is technical and depends on the precise legal ground. See the temporary stay visa guide.
Family routes
Angola does not reduce every family situation to one identical “dependent visa.” Family cases can appear inside the temporary-stay framework, including accompaniment of holders of qualifying study, medical, investor or work visas, family of a valid residence-permit holder and a spouse of an Angolan citizen.
Eligibility, residence conversion and work rights depend on the exact family ground and sponsor. A dependent should not assume that a principal's work visa automatically gives the family permanent residence or unrestricted work. See Angola family residence options.
Student visa
The student visa supports qualifying study or training. The law provides multiple entries and validity of up to one year, renewable annually until the studies finish. The implementing regulation gives a 30-working-day decision period and a ten-working-day extension period.
A student visa does not grant residence and does not authorize ordinary remunerated work. The law makes an exception for an internship connected to the training. The regulation also contains a process for transforming a student visa into a work visa when the statutory employment conditions are met. See the Angola student visa guide.
Means of subsistence, accommodation and documents
Long-duration Angola applications commonly require a passport, application form, criminal-record certificate, medical certificate, evidence of means of subsistence, accommodation evidence, photographs and proof of payment. The exact package changes by visa type.
Angola's implementing regulation allows means of subsistence to be demonstrated through sources such as grants, scholarships and an employment or promised-employment contract. In appropriate cases, a qualifying host or responsible organization can support the applicant through a formal responsibility undertaking.
Foreign documents can require Portuguese translation, authentication or legalization according to the competent diplomatic/consular post's instructions. Always use the checklist of the mission that will actually receive the application.
Angola visa fees
There is no single fee figure that should be pasted across every Angola application worldwide. Official Angolan diplomatic missions publish local currency and service-specific amounts. For example, the Embassy of Angola in Switzerland currently lists USD 250 equivalent for a work visa and CHF 200 for a residence visa, while other missions publish their own collection currencies and schedules.
Treat those as mission-specific examples, not universal global tariffs. Confirm the current amount, payment method and any urgency surcharge with the responsible Angolan mission or SME before payment.
Processing times
The implementing regulation supplies legal decision periods for several core routes:
- student visa: 30 working days;
- work visa: 30 working days;
- temporary stay visa: 30 working days;
- residence visa: 60 working days; and
- investor visa: 30 working days.
These are regulatory decision periods once the relevant application is received. They are not guarantees for the entire relocation project. Employer opinions, private-investment registration, document legalization, appointment availability, biometrics, missing-document requests and post-arrival residence steps can extend the real end-to-end timeline.
Application strategy
A reliable Angola immigration project normally follows this sequence:
- Identify the legal purpose rather than choosing a visa by marketing name.
- Confirm whether the application belongs at an Angolan diplomatic/consular mission or is a territorial process with SME.
- Complete employer, sectoral or private-investment prerequisites before filing where required.
- Prepare criminal-record, medical, qualification, civil-status, means and accommodation evidence.
- Translate/legalize documents exactly as the receiving authority requires.
- File and retain proof of the application and payment.
- After entry, complete any residence, registration, renewal or employer-compliance steps within the statutory deadlines.
Use the Africa immigration hub for regional discovery and the visa-type directory to compare route families in countries where equivalent legal categories exist.
Frequently asked questions
Does Angola have a digital nomad visa in 2026?
No dedicated digital-nomad category was identified in the current Angolan immigration framework reviewed for this guide. Tourism or tourism visa exemption should not be treated as work authorization.
Can an Angola work visa lead automatically to permanent residence?
No. The law expressly says the work visa does not grant residence. Residence status follows separate rules.
How long is temporary residence valid?
Two years, renewable for equal periods under the current foreign-citizens law.
When can permanent residence be granted?
The current law provides for permanent residence after 10 consecutive years of temporary residence, subject to continuing legal eligibility.
Is there one official Angola investor visa minimum investment?
The migration provisions reviewed require a registered private-investment project but do not state one universal visa-specific minimum capital figure for every investor-visa applicant.
Are Angola visa fees the same at every embassy?
Do not assume so. Official missions publish local fee schedules and payment currencies; verify the amount with the mission handling your file.
