Angola Family Residence Options in 2026

Angola does not use one single family visa for every dependant. The immigration basis changes according to the sponsor: a family member accompanying certain visa holders, a family member of a valid residence-permit holder and a spouse of an Angolan citizen can fall within different parts of the temporary-stay/residence framework.

For planning purposes, treat the family member as an applicant with their own legal ground rather than as someone automatically “included” on the principal's visa.

Main family grounds

Angola's foreign-citizens law includes temporary-stay grounds for:

  • a family member accompanying the holder of a qualifying study, medical-treatment, investor or work visa;
  • a family member of a foreign national who holds a valid residence permit; and
  • the spouse of an Angolan citizen.

The legal consequences are not identical. In particular, residence-conversion rules depend on the precise family ground, so an accompanying dependant of a temporary visa holder should not be promised the same residence outcome as the family of a resident.

Who counts as family?

The relationship must be demonstrated with recognized civil-status evidence appropriate to the claimed ground. Typical evidence can include marriage and birth records. The competent authority may require Portuguese translation, authentication/legalization and proof of the sponsor's valid Angolan status.

Applicants should verify the definition applicable to their category before assuming that an unmarried partner, adult child, parent or other relative qualifies in the same way as a spouse/minor child.

Documents

A family temporary-stay file can require:

  • application/request letter;
  • completed form;
  • passport and photographs;
  • criminal-record certificate where required;
  • medical certificate;
  • marriage/birth or other civil-status proof;
  • copy of the sponsor's Angolan identity, residence authorization or valid qualifying visa;
  • evidence of means of subsistence;
  • accommodation evidence;
  • commitment to comply with Angolan law; and
  • proof of the applicable fee.

Official mission guidance specifically asks for proof of family relationship when the temporary-stay request is based on family. The exact checklist should be confirmed with the receiving mission or SME.

Family of a work-visa holder

A family member can use the statutory temporary-stay ground for accompanying a qualifying work-visa holder. The principal's work visa remains employer/activity specific and does not grant residence.

The dependant should therefore avoid assuming that family status automatically creates a residence track. If the household wants long-term settlement, compare the principal's status and the dependant's own residence options early rather than waiting for multiple annual renewals.

Family of an investor

Family can accompany a qualifying investor-visa holder through the temporary-stay framework. The investor's special three-year bridge to temporary residence applies to the actual investor under its own conditions; it should not be described as automatically granting the same investor status to every family member.

Once the principal obtains temporary residence, the family basis may change and should be regularized under the appropriate current rule.

Family of a student

A family member accompanying a student-visa holder can fall within the temporary-stay framework. The student's own visa does not grant residence and ordinary paid work is restricted, so the household should budget around the actual rights of both principal and dependant rather than assuming two unrestricted work permissions.

Family of a residence-permit holder

The foreign-citizens law separately identifies family of a person with a valid residence permit as a temporary-stay ground. Because the sponsor is a resident rather than a temporary visa holder, this category has a different long-term context.

Residence conversion remains a technical legal procedure. Confirm the applicant's precise temporary-stay ground and current SME requirements before relying on a conversion deadline.

Spouse of an Angolan citizen

The spouse of an Angolan citizen is an express temporary-stay ground in the foreign-citizens law. Marriage evidence and the Angolan spouse's identity documentation are central to the file.

Marriage does not eliminate immigration procedure. The foreign spouse should obtain and maintain the correct status and should not assume that marriage alone creates an immediately issued permanent-residence card.

Validity and processing

Where the family member uses the temporary-stay route, the general framework is 365 days, renewable annually while the legal reason continues. Presidential Decree 163/20 gives a 30-working-day period for the initial temporary-stay visa and five working days for an extension.

Those are decision periods once a compliant file is received; civil-document legalization and proof of the sponsor's status can add preparation time.

Work rights for dependants

Angola's foreign-citizens law permits remunerated activity for several temporary-stay grounds, including certain family grounds. That does not justify a blanket statement that every dependant can work without further checks.

Before employment, confirm the exact statutory ground of the family member's temporary-stay visa and any labour registration/foreign-worker rules that apply. The employer should not rely on the word “family” alone as proof of work authorization.

Residence conversion

The legal framework contains transformation rules, but the result depends on the category. Presidential Decree 163/20 includes a temporary-stay-to-residence procedure with proof of Angolan criminal record, means, accommodation and payment and a 60-working-day decision term for the categories covered by that provision. It also says a particular accompanying-family ground is not convertible under that provision.

Because family grounds can look similar in everyday language while producing different legal results, ask SME to confirm the category before basing a permanent-relocation plan on conversion.

Fees

Official diplomatic missions publish local fee schedules. For example, Angola's mission in Saudi Arabia currently lists USD 150 for temporary-stay service. Treat that as a mission-specific reference, not a universal family-visa tariff.

Confirm the fee and payment currency with the office that will process the family member's application.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse come with me on an Angola work visa?

Angolan law provides a temporary-stay ground for family accompanying a qualifying work-visa holder, but the spouse needs their own properly documented immigration status.

Can a dependant work in Angola?

Some family temporary-stay grounds can permit remunerated activity under the law. Verify the exact category and current labour requirements before employment.

Does a work visa sponsor permanent residence for family?

Not automatically. A work visa itself does not grant residence. Family residence planning must follow the actual residence rules.

Is a spouse of an Angolan citizen automatically a permanent resident?

No. Spousal relationship is an express immigration ground, but the foreign spouse still follows the required immigration/residence procedure.

What is the processing time?

For a family application using the temporary-stay framework, the regulation gives a 30-working-day initial decision period.
