Algeria Temporary Work Visa in 2026

Algeria has a specific temporary-work visa for short work assignments. It is not the same as an ordinary business visa and it is not simply a shorter version of the standard two-year work permit.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the temporary-work visa as permitting a maximum stay of three months. The exact supporting labour document depends on whether the assignment is based on a service/assistance contract or an employment contract.

Two main temporary-work document patterns

The MFA says a temporary-work visa application can be supported by either:

  1. an assistance or service-provision contract, in which case the visa is not subject to prior Provisional Authorization for Temporary Work (APTT); or
  2. an employment contract, together with the APTT and an employer repatriation commitment.

This distinction matters. Applicants should document the real contractual arrangement rather than selecting the service-contract version simply to avoid a labour authorization.

Simplified rule for certain detached workers

The Labour Ministry publishes a particular procedure for foreign workers who:

  • normally work for an employer established outside Algeria;
  • are sent to Algeria by that employer;
  • perform exceptional and urgent work; and
  • spend less than three months in the year on the qualifying activity in Algeria.

For this defined category, the Ministry says the worker is subject to the temporary-work visa but does not go through the prior agreement-in-principle or provisional work authorization process used for ordinary foreign employment.

The foreign worker must nevertheless be declared to the competent Wilaya employment services, and the employer receives a declaration receipt under the foreign-worker framework.

Examples in the official procedure

The Labour Ministry gives examples of short detached work that can fit the simplified procedure, including:

  • after-sales service;
  • supervising installation or dismantling of specialized machinery;
  • training local users or maintenance staff after installation; and
  • punctual technical assistance to address operational or maintenance difficulties.

These examples show why this route should not be stretched to cover ordinary recurring employment.

Maximum duration

The MFA’s temporary-work visa page uses a maximum stay of three months. For the simplified detached-worker category, the Labour Ministry also says the cumulative intervention is limited to three months in the year.

A longer assignment should be reviewed under the ordinary work visa and work permit framework rather than repeatedly using short assignments to avoid the standard procedure.

Work-title tax

The Labour Ministry states that work permits and temporary work authorizations are generally subject to a 10,000 DZD issuance tax. It also lists categories exempt from that tax, including foreign workers intervening through a short detachment/mission of up to three months in the year.

The exemption applies to the stated work-title tax, not automatically to consular visa fees, insurance, document legalization or other costs.

Temporary-work authorization renewal timing

Where an Autorisation de Travail Temporaire (ATT) is used, the current Labour procedure says a renewal request should be lodged at least eight days before expiry.

That does not mean every three-month temporary-work visa can simply be renewed indefinitely. The legal basis, assignment facts and annual duration limits remain important.

Do you also need a resident card?

A genuinely short temporary assignment may not amount to fixing residence in Algeria. If the worker is establishing residence or the stay develops beyond the short assignment, the Interior Ministry resident-card rules should be checked separately.

The resident card and temporary-work visa are different documents. A visa controls entry/stay for the stated purpose; a work title governs the employment activity; residence documentation applies when the foreign national fixes residence.

Temporary work vs business visit

A business visa is for commercial travel such as meetings, negotiations and partner visits. The temporary-work route is for actually performing qualifying work or services in Algeria.

If the visitor will install machinery, provide technical service, execute contracted work or occupy a short employment assignment, the temporary-work analysis is usually more relevant than calling the trip “business.”

Temporary work vs ordinary work visa

Use the ordinary Algeria work visa when the foreign national will occupy a salaried role in Algeria beyond the narrow short-assignment framework. That route includes employer agreement in principle, APT, work visa and final work permit steps.

The ordinary work permit can be valid up to two years. The temporary-work visa is built around a much shorter maximum stay.

Common mistakes

  • using a business visa for hands-on technical work;
  • assuming every service contract automatically removes all labour formalities;
  • confusing APT, APTT and ATT;
  • exceeding the three-month limit for the simplified detached-worker category;
  • failing to make the required Wilaya employment declaration for a qualifying detached worker; and
  • assuming an exemption from the work-title tax means an exemption from visa or residence rules.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Algeria temporary-work visa last?

The MFA states a maximum stay of three months.

Is an APTT always required?

No. The MFA says an assistance or service-provision contract can support a temporary-work visa without prior APTT. An employment-contract case uses the relevant provisional temporary authorization and repatriation commitment.

Can a worker from an overseas company use the simplified procedure?

Potentially, when the official detached-worker conditions are met, including exceptional/urgent work and less than three months in the year. A declaration to the employment services is still required.

Is temporary work the same as a business visit?

No. A business visit does not replace the appropriate work procedure when the person will actually execute work or services in Algeria.
