Algeria Student Visa in 2026

Algeria’s student pathway has two distinct parts: the study visa used for entry and, for a student establishing residence, the foreign resident card supported by school or university enrolment.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists study as an official visa category. The Ministry of Interior then identifies educational enrolment as one of the status-specific grounds used in the resident-card file.

Who can apply for a study visa?

The MFA says the study-visa request must be justified by a certificate of registration in a public or private educational establishment approved by the Algerian state.

The applicant must also provide either:

  • a scholarship certificate issued by Algerian authorities or by the authorities of the applicant’s country; or
  • evidence of sufficient means to pay for the studies and stay.

That wording is important because the central guidance does not publish one universal monthly income or bank-balance threshold for every student. Do not substitute a private website’s amount for the official “proof of means” standard unless the competent consular post publishes a specific figure for the case.

General visa file

The central MFA guidance says visa applicants generally submit through the Algerian embassy or consulate for their habitual place of residence and provide:

  • the application form;
  • passport valid for at least six months;
  • passport copy;
  • recent identity photographs;
  • travel and repatriation-assistance insurance; and
  • the study-specific evidence described above.

A foreign national applying in a country other than the country of citizenship should also provide evidence of lawful residence there.

Individual diplomatic posts can add appointment, copy, translation, legalization or payment instructions. Use the post with jurisdiction over the applicant rather than a random embassy’s checklist.

Student residence card after arrival

The Ministry of Interior says a foreign national wishing to fix residence in Algeria should apply for the foreign resident card through the competent security services, generally 15 days before the visa expires.

The standard residence-card file includes:

  • the resident-card application;
  • birth certificate;
  • identity photographs;
  • applicable fiscal stamp;
  • medical certificates;
  • valid passport with entry visa where applicable; and
  • residential lease.

For students, the Interior Ministry specifically lists a certificate of enrolment in a school or university as the additional status evidence.

How long is student residence valid?

The Interior Ministry states that the ordinary foreign resident card is valid for two years. It also says a resident card can be granted with validity corresponding to the document that authorizes the foreign national’s presence, including a school or training certificate.

Students should therefore rely on the actual validity printed on their resident card and the underlying enrolment period rather than assuming every student receives a full two years.

Residence-card fiscal stamp

The Interior Ministry’s current Arabic resident-card service page states a 6,000 DZD fiscal stamp for the ordinary card. The competent authority should be checked at filing because fiscal legislation and reciprocity rules can affect the amount payable.

The resident-card stamp is separate from any consular visa charge, tuition, insurance, medical, translation or legalization expense.

Can a student work in Algeria?

The official study-visa and resident-card pages reviewed for this guide do not state that student status itself creates unrestricted employment rights.

Algeria’s Labour Ministry separately regulates salaried foreign workers through work permits, temporary work authorizations and statutory exemptions. A student considering employment should verify the applicable labour authorization before starting work instead of assuming the study visa or student resident card is enough.

Changing from study to work

The official guidance does not present the study visa as an automatic post-study work permit. A graduate who receives an Algerian job offer should review the work visa and work permit route, including the employer’s labour-approval obligations.

The same separation applies to business activity: registering or operating a local business involves the commercial/professional and residence framework explained in business-owner residence.

Family members

Algeria has a separate family visa, but family eligibility depends on the relationship and sponsor situation. Do not assume a student visa automatically produces dependant visas for all relatives.

The competent Algerian consular post should confirm which relationship documents, accommodation evidence and sponsor documents are required for the proposed family member.

Processing time

The central MFA study-visa guidance does not publish one universal processing-time guarantee for every study application. Processing can depend on the diplomatic post, nationality, security review, completeness of the file and the educational documents.

Students should apply with enough lead time for consular processing and then separately plan the in-country resident-card filing before the visa expires.

Common mistakes

  • using an admission letter from an institution without confirming it is approved by the Algerian state;
  • inventing a universal student income threshold where the central guidance only requires proof of means;
  • treating the study visa as the resident card;
  • missing the in-country residence filing window;
  • assuming student status automatically grants unrestricted work rights;
  • copying another embassy’s fee or checklist without checking jurisdiction; and
  • assuming graduation automatically converts the status into a work permit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main Algeria student visa requirement?

An enrolment certificate from a public or private educational institution approved by the Algerian state, plus scholarship evidence or proof of sufficient means for studies and stay.

Is there a fixed national student income requirement?

The central MFA page reviewed for this guide does not publish one universal amount; it requires scholarship or proof of means.

Does the student visa also serve as a residence card?

No. A student fixing residence should follow the Interior Ministry’s foreign resident-card procedure.

Can a student work freely?

The official study pages do not grant a blanket work right. Salaried employment is separately regulated under the foreign-worker framework.
