Algeria Visa and Residence Options in 2026
Algeria separates entry visas, permission to work or carry on an economic activity, and the foreign resident card. A visa can get a foreign national to Algeria for a stated purpose, but it should not be treated as a blanket right to work, run a local business or remain indefinitely.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently lists diplomatic, service, courtesy, press, tourist, business, study, work, temporary-work, family, medical, cultural and transit visas. The Ministry of Interior separately explains the foreign resident card for people fixing residence in Algeria, while the Ministry of Labour administers work permits and temporary work authorizations for salaried foreign workers.

Does Algeria have a digital nomad visa?
The current official Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa catalog does not list a dedicated digital-nomad or remote-worker visa. That matters because “Algeria digital nomad visa” is a common search phrase but not the name of a current Algerian visa category in the official catalog.
A visitor should not assume that a tourist or business visa authorizes ongoing remote work from Algeria. The legal analysis depends on the real activity, its duration, who benefits from the work and whether Algerian labour, commercial, residence, tax or social-security rules are triggered. For salaried work in Algeria, start with the work visa guide. For local commercial or professional activity, see business-owner residence.
Does Algeria have a startup visa?
The same caution applies to searches for an “Algeria startup visa.” The MFA’s current visa list does not identify a standalone startup or founder visa. Algeria does have an investment framework administered by the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI), including a One-stop Shop for Major Projects and Foreign Investments. AAPI announced in July 2026 that its one-stop-shop mechanism handles procedures including company creation, operating permits and work permits connected with registered investment projects.
That investment facilitation should not be relabeled as an immigration visa. A foreign founder or investor still needs the entry, residence and professional formalities that match the actual activity. The business-owner residence guide explains the distinction and targets the “Algeria startup visa” and “Algeria entrepreneur visa” search intents without inventing a nonexistent category.
Work visa and employer sponsorship
For ordinary salaried employment, Algeria uses an employer-led sequence. The Labour Ministry states that, unless a treaty or convention provides otherwise, a foreign national performing salaried activity must hold a work permit or temporary work authorization.
The current procedure guide describes an agreement-in-principle stage, followed by an Autorisation Provisoire de Travail (APT) used for the work-visa application. The MFA says a work-visa file must include the provisional work authorization, employment contract and employer repatriation commitment.
After entry, the employer generally has 15 days to lodge the work-title application for a worker who entered on a work visa. The Labour Ministry says this period is 45 days for workers from countries exempt from the entry-visa requirement. A work permit follows the fixed-term employment contract and cannot exceed two years.
The current Labour Ministry guide lists a 10,000 DZD tax for issuance of a work permit or temporary work authorization, with a 50% increase for renewal or duplicate titles. Some categories are exempt. Consular visa fees are separate and can vary by nationality and post.
Temporary work and short assignments
The temporary work route is different from ordinary employment. The MFA states that a temporary-work visa is for a maximum stay of three months and may be supported either by an assistance/service-provision contract or by an employment contract with the relevant provisional temporary authorization.
The Labour Ministry also describes a simplified regime for certain foreign workers detached by an employer established abroad for exceptional and urgent work lasting less than three months in the year. These workers can be exempt from the prior agreement-in-principle/APT process but remain subject to the temporary-work visa and a declaration to the Wilaya employment services.
Business visits are not the same as employment
For a business visa, the MFA requires a mission letter from the employer or an invitation from an Algerian partner, plus accommodation/support evidence. Labour guidance lists commercial visitors among categories not subject to work titles, but explicitly says those exemptions do not remove obligations under Algeria’s entry, stay and movement rules.
That distinction is important: attending meetings, negotiations, exhibitions or a short commercial mission is not the same as occupying a salaried post in Algeria. If the real activity is employment, use the employment framework.
Student visa and residence
A study visa requires proof of enrolment in a public or private educational institution approved by the Algerian state, together with a scholarship certificate or evidence that the applicant can finance studies and stay.
The Interior Ministry’s resident-card page lists a school or university enrolment certificate as the status-specific evidence for a student resident card. The ordinary resident card is stated as valid for two years, but the Interior Ministry also says validity can correspond to the document authorizing the person’s presence, such as a school or training certificate. Students should therefore use the period actually granted on their residence document rather than assuming a fixed study duration.
Family visa and residence
The MFA’s family visa requires legalized accommodation evidence from the Algerian family member inviting the applicant. Official consular pages add relationship evidence for foreign spouses and children of Algerian nationals; some posts also publish documentary routes for spouses, children and parents joining a foreign resident in Algeria.
A family entry visa is not automatically a resident card or work title. Anyone settling in Algeria should separately follow the Interior Ministry’s foreign resident-card process. Family members who plan to work must verify whether a work title or a specific exemption applies to them.
Residence card basics
A foreign national wishing to establish residence must apply to the competent security services for a foreign resident card. The Interior Ministry says the application should be made 15 days before the entry visa expires. The standard file includes the application form, birth certificate, photographs, fiscal stamp, medical certificates, valid passport/entry visa where applicable and residential lease.
Status-specific evidence then depends on the case:
- work permit, temporary work authorization or exempt-worker declaration for employees;
- school or university enrolment for students;
- proof of commercial, industrial, craft or liberal-profession activity; or
- proof of means of subsistence where the applicant does not intend to carry on an activity.
The current Interior guidance states that an ordinary foreign resident card is valid for two years, while it can also be aligned to the duration of the underlying authorization. The Ministry’s Arabic service page currently states a 6,000 DZD fiscal stamp for the ordinary card; applicants should verify the amount at filing because tax-stamp rules can change and reciprocity can affect charges.
Business owners, independent professionals and investors
Algeria’s Interior Ministry publishes a foreign professional card for foreigners carrying on commercial, industrial, craft or liberal-profession activity. The card is valid for two years and renewable. Current guidance requires, among other items, a criminal-record extract, resident card or receipt, commercial-register evidence, photographs and the applicable fiscal stamp.
The 2006 implementing decree for the professional card states that its holder must request a foreign resident card within 90 days after obtaining the professional card. In practice, applicants should coordinate the resident-card receipt, professional/business registration and final residence documentation with the competent Wilaya rather than assume company incorporation alone creates immigration status.
Foreign investment projects can also interact with AAPI. Its 2026 one-stop-shop reform covers foreign-investment projects, company-creation procedures and work permits. But AAPI registration is not itself a “startup visa,” “investor visa” or residence card.
Long-term 10-year resident card
The Interior Ministry says a 10-year foreign resident card may be issued to a foreign national who has lived in Algeria continuously and legally for seven years or more, and to qualifying adult children living with that person.
The file adds evidence of continuous legal residence, the current resident card, a legal basis for the request where relevant, recent tax-clearance evidence and CNAS/CASNOS affiliation evidence for workers or economically active applicants. The page currently lists a 30,000 DZD fiscal stamp for the 10-year card.
The wording is discretionary (“may be issued”), so seven years should be treated as an eligibility threshold rather than an automatic conversion. See the long-term residence guide.
Processing times: use only route-specific official standards
Algerian official sources do not publish one universal processing time for every visa and residence route. Do not apply a tourism timing to a work, family or student file.
For work permits, the 1982 implementing decree states that the employment services notify the employer of the outcome within 45 days after the relevant permit application and that a favorable opinion is deemed acquired after that deadline; the permit is then issued within 15 days following the favorable opinion. This legal timetable should still be distinguished from the earlier employer approval, APT, consular visa and residence-card stages.
The MFA separately publishes a 48-hour visa-issuance rule for tourists travelling in an organized framework after the diplomatic or consular post receives the complete file. That is a tourism-specific rule, not a general immigration processing promise.
Fees vary by step and nationality
Budget separately for:
- consular visa fees, which can vary by nationality, age, passport type, validity and number of entries;
- work-title tax where relevant;
- resident/professional card fiscal stamps;
- translations, legalization and medical documentation; and
- commercial registration or investment-project costs for business activity.
An embassy’s fee for one nationality should not be presented as Algeria’s universal visa fee.
Common mistakes
- assuming a tourist or business visa permits salaried employment;
- calling an AAPI investment project a “startup visa”;
- assuming Algeria has a dedicated digital-nomad visa because the phrase appears on private websites;
- starting salaried work before the correct work title is in place;
- ignoring the 15-day post-entry employer filing stage for ordinary work-visa holders;
- treating a professional card, commercial register and resident card as interchangeable documents;
- assuming a family entry visa automatically grants residence or work rights;
- generalizing one consulate’s fee to all nationalities; and
- treating seven years of residence as an automatic 10-year card rather than an eligibility rule.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an Algeria digital nomad visa?
The MFA’s current official visa catalog does not list a dedicated digital-nomad or remote-worker category. Remote workers should not assume that visitor status authorizes ongoing work from Algeria.
Is there an Algeria startup visa?
No dedicated startup visa appears in the current official visa catalog. Foreign founders may instead need company/investment procedures plus the professional and residence formalities that match their activity.
How long can an Algeria work permit last?
The Labour Ministry states that a work permit cannot exceed two years and is renewable under the statutory conditions.
What is the short temporary-work limit?
The MFA describes the temporary-work visa as allowing a maximum stay of three months. A simplified detached-worker regime also uses a three-month-in-the-year limit for qualifying exceptional assignments.
How long is an ordinary resident card valid?
The Interior Ministry states two years, with the possibility for the validity to correspond to the underlying authorization that permits the foreign national’s presence.
When can a foreigner qualify for a 10-year resident card?
The Interior Ministry says it may be issued after at least seven years of continuous legal residence, subject to the required file and authority decision.
