Bahamas Student Residence Permit in 2026

Foreign students who need immigration permission to live in The Bahamas for study use the residence-permit framework rather than a generic visitor stay. The Department’s current permit-to-reside application includes a specific STUDENT residence type.

Study basis

The fee regulations distinguish residence for a person attending an institution of higher learning in The Bahamas on a full-time basis, or as a qualifying trainee with the required education certification. The applicant should therefore have formal evidence of admission/enrolment and the institution/course details requested by Immigration.

The current application materials ask for school or institutional information, passport and personal details, local address and family/dependant information.

2026 fee position

The 2023 Immigration Fees amendment increased the student/qualifying-trainee residence fee to $300 for each year or part of a year. General processing charges can be separate, so applicants should confirm the full amount requested for their specific application.

Student status does not equal an open work permit

The Immigration (General) Regulations make ordinary residence permission non-work status. There is no blanket rule in the reviewed current materials giving every foreign student unrestricted employment rights.

If a student wants paid work, the employment must be checked separately under the Bahamas work permit framework or a specific exemption. Do not rely on the student card alone as authorization to work.

Documents

The Department’s residence application framework points to the following kinds of evidence:

  • completed residence/student application;
  • passport and photographs;
  • police certificate where required;
  • recent medical certificate;
  • school/institution certification or enrolment evidence;
  • local accommodation/contact information; and
  • financial/sponsor details requested for the residence case.

Dependants

The Department’s permit form states that a separate Permit to Reside application must be submitted for a spouse or dependant who will reside in The Bahamas. Student status therefore should not be treated as automatically covering an entire family under one card.

A dependant’s work position is also separate. If a spouse qualifies through a Bahamian citizen relationship, the resident spouse route has its own rules.

Duration and renewal

A residence permit is valid for the period stated on it and can be extended subject to the Immigration authorities. Students should apply/renew early enough to keep immigration status aligned with the academic programme; the law does not create an automatic post-study work period simply because the programme ends.

Graduates seeking local employment should move to the appropriate work authorization rather than continuing to rely on student residence.

Study is not permanent residence

Years of student residence should not be marketed as an automatic route to a lifetime certificate. The permanent residence framework is category-specific and requires a separate application and decision.
