Bahamas Annual Residence Permit in 2026
The Bahamas’ ordinary residence permit is the principal route for a foreign national who wants to live in the country for an approved period without taking ordinary local employment. It is commonly described as annual residence, but the legal point is more important than the label: under the current Immigration (General) Regulations, a residence permit allows the holder to remain otherwise than for gainful occupation.
Who this route fits
Annual residence can suit financially self-supporting residents, retirees, second-home users who are not using the separate homeowner card, and other applicants with a credible reason to reside without local employment. It is not a dedicated “retirement visa” with a published pension threshold.
The Department’s Annual Permit Requirements Questionnaire asks whether the applicant owns or rents accommodation, lists local and overseas investments, asks for sources and amounts of income (including employment, pension, investments and trusts), asks how much time will be spent in The Bahamas, and asks about investment prospects and the reason for residence.
Crucially, the questionnaire does not publish one universal minimum income or savings figure. Any website claiming a single mandatory monthly-income threshold should be checked against current Department guidance for the applicant’s category.
Current government fees
The Immigration Fees (Amendment) Regulations 2023 increased the general residence-permit charge to $3,000 for each year or part of a year. The same amendment set the ordinary processing fee for permits and certificates at $200.
Dependants and certain family/student residence categories have different statutory charges, so the $3,000 general rate should not be mechanically applied to every family member or student.
No automatic work right
The most important restriction is employment. Regulation 5 states that it is a condition of every ordinary residence permit that the holder must not engage in gainful occupation without first obtaining a work visa for that particular form of work.
That means passive overseas income, pension income or investments can support a residence case without converting the permit into a local employment authorization. A resident who later accepts Bahamian employment should address the work-permit rules before starting.
Application evidence
The Department’s permit-to-reside form asks a non-working applicant for:
- two passport photographs;
- a police certificate covering five years of residence;
- a medical certificate dated not earlier than 30 days before the application;
- two testimonials of good character;
- passport and local-address information;
- income and financial references; and
- accommodation and family details.
The annual questionnaire supplements those items with information about home ownership or rent, investments and source of income. The Department or Immigration Board can request additional evidence.
Homeowners have a separate card option
If you own a home, compare the Home Owner Resident Card. The General Regulations expressly recognize an annual home owner resident biometric card, and the Department publishes a dedicated application with title, landholding and property-tax documents.
That homeowner card should still not be confused with economic permanent residence. The latter requires a $1,000,000 qualifying investment held for at least ten years.
Family members
A spouse or dependant who will reside in The Bahamas generally needs a separate application/status. The permit-to-reside form expressly notes that a separate Permit to Reside application must be submitted for a spouse or dependant who will be residing in the country.
If the foreign spouse is married to a Bahamian citizen, review the resident spouse route, because that status can expressly include gainful occupation and uses different evidence and fees.
Renewal and permanent residence
A residence permit is valid for the period stated on it and may be extended subject to the Immigration Board/Department’s direction. Do not assume that paying annual fees for a number of years automatically converts the permit into permanent residence.
For long-term planning, use the Bahamas permanent residence guide and identify the specific permanent-residence category that applies.
Return to the Bahamas residence hub or compare Caribbean relocation options.
