Argentina Student Visa / Residence in 2026

Argentina's Article 23(j) student category provides temporary residence for foreign nationals admitted as regular students in recognized secondary, tertiary, university or specialized educational programs.

It is different from a short transitory study stay. For a degree or other qualifying longer program, the temporary-residence framework is the relevant starting point.

Who qualifies?

The current DNM student residence page is aimed at regular students in public or private institutions that are officially recognized.

The educational institution must be properly registered for the DNM process, and the student must provide the required electronic enrollment or institutional evidence.

A course marketed to foreigners is not automatically a residence-qualifying program. Confirm that the institution and study program fit DNM's current process before paying non-refundable tuition.

Documents

Current DNM requirements include route-appropriate versions of:

  • valid passport or accepted MERCOSUR identity document;
  • Argentine criminal-record certificate for applicants above the specified age;
  • required foreign criminal-record certificates;
  • proof of domicile in Argentina;
  • evidence of regular entry; and
  • official enrollment/student evidence from the qualifying institution.

Foreign records may need apostille/legalization and Spanish translation.

One year or two years?

This is an area where the current statute and current service page are not perfectly synchronized.

The consolidated Migration Law's current Article 23(j) says student temporary residence may be granted for up to two years, renewable. DNM's current operational student service page still describes a one-year residence, renewable.

ReloTide does not turn the statutory maximum into a guaranteed two-year card. Applicants should expect the duration stated in the actual DNM resolution and check whether the service-page implementation has been updated at filing time.

Can international students work in Argentina?

Article 51 of the current Migration Law allows temporary residents to carry out remunerated or lucrative activity during their authorized residence period. The student category itself remains based on genuine study and regular enrollment.

Employment must comply with Argentine labor, tax and social-security rules and should not undermine the study basis supporting the residence. A person whose real purpose is full-time Argentine employment should compare migrant worker residence.

Fee

DNM's current temporary-residence fee is 50 UMSM for MERCOSUR/associated-state applicants and 100 UMSM for extra-MERCOSUR applicants. With the current official value of ARS 1,000 per UMSM, those are ARS 50,000 and ARS 100,000 at the verified date.

University tuition, document fees, translations, apostilles and criminal-record certificates are separate.

Renewal

A student renewing temporary residence should expect to prove that the qualifying study basis continues. Enrollment status, academic continuity and current personal documents can be relevant. Do not wait until the final days of the residence to discover that an updated institutional record or foreign document is needed.

Short study vs temporary student residence

Argentina also uses transitory categories for certain shorter study or exchange activities. A short course or limited exchange therefore should not automatically be described as the same status as Article 23(j) temporary residence.

Temporary residence is more significant for work rights and for building qualifying residence history. Transitory stays generally operate under different work restrictions and do not necessarily contribute to the same permanent-residence path.

Family

Students who have qualifying family members should review the current family reunification residence. The family member's immigration status requires its own legal basis and documentation.

Permanent residence

DNM's current permanent-residence guidance publishes time-based criteria after qualifying temporary residence: generally two years for MERCOSUR nationals and three years for non-MERCOSUR nationals, subject to the current law and the type/history of temporary residence.

DNM also requires applicants relying on time-based arraigo to demonstrate presence in Argentina for more than 50% of the temporary-residence period granted. A residence precaria does not count for arraigo under the post-2025 law.

Health insurance

The 2025 migration reform introduced a statutory health-insurance declaration requirement for entry under migration categories while preserving emergency-care access. Students should follow both immigration requirements and any separate insurance rules imposed by their institution.

Do not rely on older pre-2025 articles describing public healthcare access without checking the current law.

Tax considerations

A student can become Argentine tax resident depending on immigration status and duration of presence. Student status is not, by itself, a blanket tax exemption. Employment, scholarships, foreign income and assets can each create separate tax questions.

Application checklist

Before filing:

  1. confirm the institution and program are officially recognized and usable for DNM residence;
  2. obtain the institution's required electronic enrollment evidence;
  3. prepare identity, criminal-record, domicile and regular-entry records;
  4. apostille/legalize and translate foreign documents where required;
  5. budget for the current DNM migration fee; and
  6. treat the actual DNM grant as controlling for duration rather than assuming the statutory maximum.
