Argentina Pensioner / Retirement Visa in 2026

Argentina's Article 23(c) pensionado category is a temporary-residence route for a foreign national who receives a regular and permanent pension from a government, international organization or private company for services performed abroad.

It is commonly called the Argentina retirement visa, but the legal test is not simply age. The applicant must prove a qualifying pension and meet DNM's current financial threshold.

Who qualifies?

The current DNM pensioner procedure describes a pension received from:

  • a foreign government;
  • an international organization; or
  • a private company for services rendered abroad.

The pension must produce a regular and permanent flow of income. A person living on rental income, dividends or other investment returns rather than a pension should compare the separate rentista residence.

Current pension threshold

DNM requires pension income of at least five times the Salario Mínimo, Vital y Móvil (SMVM).

From 1 September 2026, Resolution 4/2026 sets the SMVM at ARS 383,800 per month. On 16 September 2026 the pensioner benchmark is therefore ARS 1,919,000 per month.

The formula matters more than the snapshot. The SMVM changes, and the five-SMVM threshold changes with it. Recalculate on the actual application or renewal date.

Evidence of the pension

Applicants should be prepared to prove both entitlement and payment. The exact document varies by pension provider, but the evidence needs to establish that the pension is legitimate, regular and permanent and satisfies the current threshold.

For a permit initiated from abroad, DNM's current rentista/pensioner entry-permit page applies the same five-SMVM benchmark. Foreign pension documents can require apostille/legalization and Spanish translation.

Standard immigration documents

The residence application also uses DNM's normal temporary-residence evidence, including appropriate versions of:

  • valid passport or qualifying MERCOSUR identity document;
  • Argentine criminal-record certificate;
  • required foreign criminal-record certificates;
  • proof of domicile in Argentina;
  • proof of regular entry; and
  • the pension documentation.

Validity

Article 23(c) permits pensioner temporary residence for up to three years, renewable. DNM's current in-country service page describes the operational grant as one year, renewable.

The separate entry-permit page says a qualifying temporary entry permit can be issued for up to three years. Applicants should distinguish those procedural descriptions and rely on the validity stated in their actual residence resolution.

Work rights

Temporary residents fall under Article 51 of the current Migration Law, which permits remunerated or lucrative activity during authorized temporary residence. The pension, however, remains the criterion supporting a pensioner application.

A person whose actual relocation basis is Argentine employment should consider work residence. A person without a qualifying pension but with qualifying passive foreign income should compare rentista residence.

Fees

DNM's current fee table lists temporary residence at 50 UMSM for MERCOSUR/associated-state applicants and 100 UMSM for extra-MERCOSUR applicants. With the current official value of ARS 1,000 per UMSM, those are ARS 50,000 and ARS 100,000 at the verified date.

Document procurement, translations, apostilles and consular or entry-permit procedures can create separate costs.

Family members

A spouse, parent or qualifying child does not automatically become a pensioner because the principal applicant receives a pension. Defined relatives can potentially apply under Argentina's current family reunification temporary residence.

Where DNM evaluates the family's support, pension income and family circumstances should be documented consistently.

Permanent residence

DNM's current guidance publishes residence-based permanent criteria after two years of temporary residence for MERCOSUR nationals and three years for non-MERCOSUR nationals, subject to current law and case-specific eligibility.

The applicant relying on time in temporary residence must also satisfy DNM's presence rule: more than 50% of the granted temporary-residence period must have been spent in Argentina. See the Permanent Residence guide.

Health insurance and medical care

Decree 366/2025 amended the Migration Law's health and entry provisions. Emergency care may not be denied, while the law also establishes a health-insurance declaration requirement for entry under migration categories and different rules for routine public healthcare depending on status.

Retirees should therefore budget for appropriate health coverage rather than relying on older claims that immigration status guarantees unrestricted free routine care in every situation.

Tax residence and foreign pensions

Tax residence is separate from pensioner immigration status. ARCA's general tax rules can make a foreign national Argentine tax resident after permanent residence or after the relevant period living in Argentina under temporary immigration authorization.

The taxation of foreign pensions, treaty treatment and reporting obligations can depend on source country and individual facts. Immigration approval does not itself determine the tax result.

Practical checklist

Before applying:

  1. confirm your payment is a qualifying pension rather than unrelated passive income;
  2. calculate five times the live SMVM;
  3. obtain official pension-entitlement and payment evidence;
  4. prepare criminal-record, domicile and regular-entry documents;
  5. legalize/apostille and translate foreign records where required; and
  6. verify the live DNM fee and filing channel.
