How the application works

Afghanistan's MFA operates an eConsulate visa application system. Applicants complete the official form and prepare required documents, but this should not be confused with a universally paperless eVisa.

Current mission instructions can require applicants to:

  1. complete the online MFA visa form;
  2. print the completed application;
  3. prepare photographs and passport copies;
  4. submit the original passport and supporting documents at the mission; and
  5. collect the passport after processing.

Some MFA-controlled mission pages use the term “e-Visa” for the online process, while also instructing applicants to attend the consulate. Check the actual mission workflow rather than assuming electronic approval alone is sufficient.

Tourist status does not permit employment

Tourist status should not be used for employment. Afghanistan's Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs stated in April 2026 that officials were coordinating foreign work-visa and work-permit procedures and specifically discussing prevention of foreign nationals working under tourist visas.

Tourist visa vs visitor visa

The MFA separately publishes a Visitor Visa for travel connected to sports competitions, exhibitions, or visits to relatives and friends. That is a distinct purpose from ordinary tourism.

If the main reason for travel is visiting a family member or friend, ask the competent Afghan mission whether the Visitor Visa rather than the Tourist Visa is the correct category.

Visa on arrival is not a general tourist option

Afghanistan publishes a visa-on-arrival category, but it is limited to cases supported by an official letter from a domestic organization or an official invitation from an international organization operating in Afghanistan, with MFA approval at Kabul International Airport.

The current arrival-visa page publishes one-month validity/stay and a USD200 fee. Ordinary tourists should not assume they can obtain a visa at the airport without the required prior official basis.

Extending a stay

Current official mission material says travelers who need to remain longer can seek an extension through the MFA's Consular Directorate in Kabul. Afghanistan also publishes a separate Residence Visa, but the central residence page lists service, business, entry, student and crew categories as its qualifying bases—not tourist status.

A tourist should therefore confirm the correct extension mechanism before the original one-month stay expires rather than assuming automatic conversion to residence.

Dual-national Afghans

The MFA confirmed in December 2025 that Afghans traveling on foreign passports do not need an Afghan visa when they can show proof of Afghan identity. That exemption is different from the rules for foreign tourists with no Afghan nationality connection.
