Afghanistan Residence Visa in 2026

Afghanistan's current Residence Visa is a time-limited continued-stay category for foreign nationals who are already using certain qualifying visa types. It is not published as a general permanent-residence program and should not be confused with citizenship or an indefinite immigration status.

Who can use the current residence category?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the residence visa is issued to foreign nationals continuing their stay in Afghanistan after using visas such as:

  • service visa;
  • business visa;
  • entry visa;
  • student visa; and
  • crew visa.

That list is important. The central residence page does not present ordinary tourist status as one of the listed qualifying bases.

Validity and published fee

The current MFA residence page publishes:

A 12-month residence period therefore should not be described as a flat USD50 product; the ministry states a monthly fee.

Residence visa vs entry visa

The residence visa is generally the continuation step rather than the initial reason for travel.

For example:

  • a foreign employee may first enter on the employment entry visa, then arrange continued residence if the job continues;
  • a business traveler may use the Business Visa, then use the residence framework for a legitimate longer stay; and
  • a student may enter under the Student Visa, then continue residence for a longer course.

The underlying purpose still matters. Residence does not erase separate work-permit, university, business-registration or licensing requirements.

Residence does not replace the work permit

An employee who receives residence must still keep the separate MoLSA work authorization in order. Afghanistan's current labor administration distinguishes foreign work permits from immigration visas, and MoLSA actively monitors foreign workers for legal work permits.

A residence sticker/status is therefore not a substitute for employment authorization.

Is this permanent residence?

No. The MFA publishes a maximum period of one year under this category. The public material describes a renewable/continued stay, not permanent residence.

The route should not be marketed as Afghan permanent residence, settlement or a guaranteed path to citizenship.

Applying for continued residence

The exact current in-country filing steps are less detailed on the public English MFA site than the central category definition. Applicants should coordinate with the MFA Consular Directorate and the organization or institution supporting the underlying status.

A practical preparation list includes:

  1. valid passport;
  2. evidence of the current qualifying visa/status;
  3. documents showing the continuing purpose—employment, business, study, service or crew activity;
  4. sponsor/employer/university documentation where applicable;
  5. proof that any separate work, business or study authorization remains valid; and
  6. payment of the official residence fee for the requested period.

File before the existing authorized stay expires.

Extensions and re-entry

Current mission pages commonly direct people needing longer stays to the MFA Consular Directorate in Kabul. Re-entry arrangements can be a separate issue, and Afghanistan's broader visa system includes re-entry and exit categories in current mission guidance.

Do not assume that a residence period automatically allows unlimited exit and re-entry. Confirm the travel permission attached to the actual document/status before leaving Afghanistan.

Family members

Current central residence guidance does not publish a universal derivative-family rule on the residence page. Some MFA-controlled missions publish an Entry (Family) Visa for people with documented Afghan family connections, but that should not be generalized into an automatic dependant right for every residence holder.

Families should confirm the correct category directly with the competent mission/MFA based on nationality, relationship and the principal holder's status.

Overstay and exit visa

The MFA separately publishes an Exit Visa for certain foreign nationals who could not extend their visas for legally justified reasons. That is not a routine extension strategy.

Applicants should arrange residence or extension before expiry. An exit visa is designed to regularize departure in specified circumstances, not to create a longer lawful stay after an avoidable overstay.

  • calling the residence visa permanent residence;
