Afghanistan Visa and Residence Options in 2026

Afghanistan currently publishes a defined set of visa categories through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). For most travelers and longer-term foreign residents, the key distinction is between a short-purpose visa used to enter the country and a later residence, work-permit, business-registration or extension step that may be required after arrival.

The current MFA list includes tourist, business, service, entry, residence, student, visit, arrival, crew, transit, entry-permit and exit categories. This guide focuses on the five routes with the clearest recurring immigration or relocation intent: tourism, business, employment, study and continued residence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the central visa authority

The MFA's Directorate of Consular Affairs publishes the current visa categories and states that Afghan diplomatic and consular missions issue visas to foreign nationals under current procedures. The ministry also operates an eConsulate application system used to complete visa forms and prepare supporting documents.

The online form should not automatically be described as a fully digital eVisa. Current official mission guidance can still require the applicant to print the completed form, appear at a mission and submit the passport and supporting documents. Filing practice can therefore differ by diplomatic post.

Tourist visa

The current MFA tourist page requires a valid passport and evidence consistent with the travel purpose, including hotel booking confirmation. It publishes:

• validity: three months;
• permitted stay: one month; and
• fee: USD80.

Tourist status is for tourism, not employment. Afghanistan's Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs said in April 2026 that authorities were specifically discussing prevention of foreign nationals working under tourist visas and improving the foreign work-visa/work-permit process.

Business visa

The MFA currently says a business visa is issued on the basis of a valid business license, passport copy and supporting bank statements. Its central service page publishes validity from one month to three years and a government fee range of USD40 to USD300.

Mission-level fee tables show that the amount depends on validity and entry configuration. Current official mission pages in Mumbai and Doha, for example, publish multi-entry business options with increasing fees for longer validity periods.

A business visa is not the same as a company licence or unrestricted employment permission. Afghanistan's Ministry of Industry and Commerce separately handles business/investment facilitation and registration matters. Foreign business operators should align immigration status with any commercial registration, licensing and tax obligations.

Employment: entry visa plus work permit

Current MFA material describes the employment route as an entry/work visa issued to people invited by licensed companies or institutions in Afghanistan. The application depends on an official letter from the relevant organization and MFA approval through an Afghan diplomatic or consular mission.

The central MFA information publishes:

• visa validity: three months;
• permitted stay: one month; and
• fee: USD100.

That immigration visa is not the whole employment authorization. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA) maintains work-permit procedures and forms for foreign nationals. In April 2026, MoLSA publicly discussed coordination with the foreign affairs and interior ministries to streamline both foreign work visas and work permits, while emphasizing that foreign nationals should not work on tourist visas.

Student visa

The MFA's current student-visa page says student visas are issued on the basis of agreements with recognized universities in Afghanistan and valid educational documents from the applicant.

It publishes validity of three months, with a stay between one and three months, and a fee range of USD40 to USD100. A student who needs to remain longer should confirm the extension or residence procedure with the university and the competent Afghan authorities before the initial stay expires.

Residence visa for continuing a qualifying stay

The current MFA residence category is not presented as a general permanent-residence program. It is a continued-stay visa for foreign nationals already using specified categories: service, business, entry, student or crew visas.

The ministry publishes:

• validity/stay: one month to one year; and
• fee: USD50 for each month.

That makes the residence visa materially different from the initial tourist or entry visa. It is a time-limited continuation mechanism, not an automatic path to permanent residence or citizenship.

Visit, family and entry categories

The MFA separately publishes a Visitor Visa for people traveling for sports competitions, exhibitions or visits to relatives and friends. The central page gives three-month validity, a one-to-three-month stay and a published fee range presented as USD80–240.

Some current Afghan mission pages also publish an Entry (Family) Visa for applicants who can document Afghan family identity or marriage connections. Because the detailed family checklist and fee presentation vary by mission, ReloTide does not treat that mission-specific product as a universal standalone family-residence page. Applicants should use the current MFA page and the competent mission serving their place of application.

The MFA also confirmed in December 2025 that Afghan dual nationals traveling on a foreign passport do not need an Afghan visa when they can present proof of Afghan identity.

Visa on arrival is limited

Afghanistan does publish a visa-on-arrival category, but it is not a general tourist-on-arrival scheme. The MFA says it is issued at Kabul International Airport on the basis of an official letter from a domestic organization or an official invitation from an international organization operating in Afghanistan, with MFA approval.

The current published validity/stay is one month and the fee is USD200.

Travelers should not board a flight assuming they can simply purchase a tourist visa at the airport.

Application channel: online form plus mission processing

The MFA eConsulate instructions require applicants to complete the online form and prepare documents such as identity/nationality evidence and photographs. Current official mission guidance shows that many applicants must still appear at the relevant embassy or consulate with the printed form, original passport and supporting records.

A practical process is:

1. identify the correct current visa category;
2. confirm the competent Afghan diplomatic mission for your residence;
3. complete the official MFA/eConsulate application form;
4. collect route-specific invitation, business, university or employer documents;
5. confirm the mission's current fee and appointment/submission process;
6. submit the passport and application as instructed; and
7. after arrival, complete any work permit, residence continuation, business registration or extension process before the initial stay expires.

Business and tax registration are separate from immigration

Afghanistan's Ministry of Industry and Commerce states that it supports foreign investment and business registration, including foreign investors. The Ministry of Finance publishes separate tax guides for businesses, investors and individuals, including taxpayer identification, wage withholding and business receipts taxation.

A business or residence visa should therefore not be treated as proof that all commercial or tax registration requirements have been completed.

Current-source caution matters in Afghanistan
