UAE Green Residence in 2026

The UAE Green Residence—still commonly searched as the “UAE Green Visa”—is a five-year renewable residence framework that allows qualifying applicants to live in the UAE without a sponsor inside the country.

Current ICP guidance groups three materially different applicant types under the same Green system:

  1. skilled workers;
  2. freelancers and self-employed professionals; and
  3. investors and business partners.

Because those are official categories within one residence framework, this guide treats Green Residence as one canonical route rather than creating overlapping “freelancer visa” and “investor Green Visa” pages.

Core benefits

ICP currently lists the following Green Residence benefits:

  • 5-year residence, renewable;
  • no UAE sponsor required for the principal residence;
  • ability to sponsor qualifying family members, including spouse and children; and
  • more flexible grace periods after expiry or cancellation than ordinary sponsored residence.

GDRFA Dubai service pages state a 180-day grace period after expiry or cancellation for the Green self-employment and high-skilled-worker categories.

Category 1: skilled workers

A skilled employee can qualify for Green Residence when the current ICP criteria are met. The principal requirements are:

  • a valid UAE employment contract;
  • occupation classified in MOHRE professional levels 1, 2 or 3;
  • at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent; and
  • monthly salary of at least AED15,000 or the equivalent in another currency.

This category is self-sponsored for residence purposes, but it is not “employment without an employer.” The applicant still needs a real UAE employment contract and the appropriate work authorisation for the job.

That distinction separates Green Residence from the standard employer-sponsored work route: Green removes the employer as immigration sponsor for qualifying skilled workers, but it does not remove the employment relationship or labour-law requirements.

Category 2: freelancers and self-employed professionals

The Green freelance/self-employment route is one of the main current legal frameworks behind searches for “UAE freelancer visa” and “Dubai self-employed visa.”

Current ICP and GDRFA requirements include:

  • a freelance or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE;
  • at least a bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent;
  • proof of stable income or financial solvency; and
  • annual freelance/self-employment income for the previous two years of at least AED360,000 or equivalent, unless the applicant instead proves the required financial solvency for the period of residence.

The AED360,000 figure is an annual test, not a monthly salary threshold. It should not be mixed with the AED15,000 monthly figure used for Green skilled employees.

Category 3: investors and business partners

Green Residence also covers qualifying investors and partners in commercial activities.

Current ICP guidance requires:

  • proof of the investment or contribution to a UAE business venture; and
  • the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities.

GDRFA Dubai's investor/partner Green service lists practical evidence such as the partnership or memorandum of association/investment contract and a trade licence.

The current central ICP Green guide does not publish one universal AED minimum for every investor/partner case. Do not import an AED2 million Golden Residency threshold into Green Residence. The business licence, ownership/partnership evidence and competent-authority approval must match the actual commercial activity.

Green Residence vs Golden Residency for investors

The Golden Residency is a different long-term framework with higher or more specific qualification tests. Current Golden investor categories commonly use AED2 million thresholds for public investment or real estate, while entrepreneur categories use different revenue, approval or exit-value criteria.

Green Residence is therefore not simply a cheaper Golden Visa. It is a separate five-year framework for qualifying skilled workers, freelancers/self-employed professionals, and investors/business partners.

Green Residence vs ordinary investor/business residence

Searches for “UAE investor visa” can lead to multiple legal products. Current federal policy places qualifying business investors/partners inside the Green framework, while emirate-specific property-owner services and Golden investor residence also exist.

A business owner should identify whether the case is based on participation in a licensed commercial activity, real-estate ownership, or a Golden-level qualifying investment before choosing a filing category.

Green Residence vs virtual work

The virtual-work residence is a one-year route for a person working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE, with a published income floor of USD3,500 per month.

Green freelance/self-employment residence instead requires a UAE freelance/self-employment permit and the Green category's qualification/income or solvency tests. Green skilled-worker residence requires a UAE employment contract.

Choose by the real activity, not simply by which route has the longer validity period.

Dubai filing and published fees

GDRFA Dubai publishes Green Residence service pages for the high-skilled worker, self-employment, and investor/partner categories.

The residence-stage fee components shown on those service pages include:

| Component | Published Dubai amount | |---|---:| | Residence permit fee | AED200 | | Knowledge Dirham | AED10 | | Innovation Dirham | AED10 | | Inside-country fee, when applicable | AED500 | | Delivery | AED20 |

GDRFA notes that the issuance fee increases by AED100 for each year when residence is longer than two years.

These figures are service-card fees, not an all-in setup cost. Freelance permits, business licences, company/free-zone fees, medical fitness, Emirates ID, insurance and professional services can be separate.

Processing target

GDRFA Dubai lists 48 hours as the expected completion time for several Green Residence service cards after the requirements are complete.

That is not a guarantee of the entire process. Obtaining a freelance permit, employment approval, trade licence, medical fitness, insurance or other upstream evidence can take additional time.

Family sponsorship

ICP states that Green Residence holders can sponsor family members including spouse and children under the approved rules. The ICP FAQ also refers to Green holders sponsoring first-degree relatives.

Family residence does not automatically authorise employment. A family member who works for a UAE employer should obtain the appropriate work permit even if residence remains linked to the Green principal.

Medical fitness, Emirates ID and insurance

Green Residence is an immigration status, not a standalone digital certificate. Residence issuance still connects to identity and health formalities.

Applicants should expect passport, photograph, medical-fitness and Emirates ID steps, plus health-insurance requirements under the applicable emirate/category. GDRFA service cards include medical and identity documentation in the residence process.

Tax implications for freelancers and founders

The UAE does not levy personal income tax on individual salary income, but self-employment and business activity can have separate federal tax consequences.

The Federal Tax Authority states that a natural person conducting a UAE business or business activity can become subject to Corporate Tax when annual turnover from that business exceeds AED1 million. Salary, personal investment income and real-estate investment income are excluded from that natural-person business-turnover test.

Green Residence therefore should not be marketed as a “tax-free freelancer visa.” Immigration status and federal tax obligations must be analysed separately.

Application workflow

Skilled worker

  1. Confirm the occupation is MOHRE level 1–3.
  2. Confirm the UAE employment contract is valid.
  3. Verify the bachelor's-degree/equivalent requirement.
  4. Confirm salary is at least AED15,000 per month.
  5. Obtain the required work-permit/authority evidence.
  6. Apply through ICP or GDRFA Dubai as appropriate.
  7. Complete medical, Emirates ID, insurance and residence formalities.

Freelancer or self-employed applicant

  1. Obtain the correct MOHRE freelance/self-employment permit.
  2. Confirm the education requirement.
  3. Prepare two years of income evidence showing at least AED360,000 annually, or the financial-solvency evidence accepted for the route.
  4. File through the competent immigration authority.
  5. Complete residence, medical, Emirates ID and insurance steps.

Investor or business partner

  1. Establish or document the qualifying UAE commercial participation.
  2. Obtain the required business licence and approvals.
  3. Prepare the partnership, memorandum of association or investment evidence.
  4. File the Green investor/partner category through the competent authority.
  5. Maintain the qualifying business relationship and licence while the residence remains valid.

Common mistakes

  • treating Green Residence as one set of requirements for every applicant;
  • using the AED15,000 skilled-worker salary test for freelancers;
  • treating AED360,000 as a monthly figure rather than prior-year annual freelance income;
  • assuming a freelance trade licence automatically satisfies the immigration criteria without the required permit and qualification evidence;
  • importing Golden Residency's AED2 million threshold into Green investor/partner residence;
  • assuming skilled-worker Green Residence removes the need for a valid employment contract;
  • overlooking medical, Emirates ID, insurance and licensing costs; and
  • assuming self-sponsored residence means unrestricted activity outside the approved employment/business framework.
