Indonesia Visa and Immigration Options in 2026

Indonesia now uses a detailed visa-index system rather than one generic “KITAS visa.” The right route depends on what you will actually do: make business visits, work remotely for a foreign company, take Indonesian employment, invest in an Indonesian company, make a larger qualifying investment, or live in Indonesia under a capital- or age-based residence category.

The practical rule is simple: start with the activity, then match it to the current visa index. KITAS is common shorthand for a limited-stay permit, not the name of one universal immigration product.

Main routes at a glance

| Goal | Current route | Core 2026 fact | |---|---|---| | Meetings, negotiations and ordinary business visits | C2 Business Visitor Visa | Single entry; up to 60 days initially, extendable to 180 days; no Indonesian salary/work | | Work remotely for a company outside Indonesia | E33G Remote Worker Visa | 1-year stay; foreign-company employment; at least USD60,000/year income evidence | | Work for an Indonesian employer | Work Visa / employer-sponsored ITAS | Visa index depends on role; employer-side RPTKA rules remain important | | Own a substantial stake and work in your invested company | E28A Investor Visa / investor ITAS | Up to 2 years; at least IDR10 billion share ownership in the sponsor company | | Obtain 5- or 10-year investor residence | Indonesia Golden Visa | Multiple E28 categories; thresholds depend on investment model | | Long-stay residence without ordinary employment sponsorship | E33 Second Home Visa | 5 or 10 years; USD130,000 bank deposit commitment or USD1 million apartment/condominium | | Retire in Indonesia | E33E Retirement Visa | Age 55+, 5-year framework, USD50,000 deposit and USD3,000/month income evidence |

Business visitors, founders and pre-investment trips

Indonesia's current national visa list separates ordinary business visits from residence. C2 is the main single-entry business visitor category for activities such as meetings, negotiations, purchasing, signing business agreements and inspecting goods. The current C2 page gives an initial stay of up to 60 days, extensions up to 180 days, and published initial PNBP of IDR2,000,000.

C2 does not authorize the holder to sell goods/services in Indonesia or receive Indonesian salary, wages or compensation. Repeat visitors should compare the current D2 multiple-entry business visitor category, while C12 is the specific pre-investment route for field surveys, feasibility studies and similar preparatory work.

For the distinctions and work restrictions, use the Indonesia Business Visa guide.

Digital nomads and remote employees

Indonesia has an official route that maps cleanly to “Indonesia digital nomad visa” searches: E33G Remote Worker Special Residency Visa. Current Immigration material describes it as a one-year limited-stay route for carrying out duties for a company established outside Indonesia.

The published special evidence includes annual salary/income of at least USD60,000 and an employment agreement with an overseas company. It is sponsor-free under the route-specific central guidance and its published one-year immigration fee package totals IDR7,000,000.

This is materially different from arriving on a visitor or business visa and working remotely. Use the E33G guide for the current requirements.

Indonesian employment is a different pathway

A foreign national who will work for an Indonesian employer should not use E33G merely because the job can be done on a laptop, and should not use C2 merely because the employer calls the trip a “business visit.” Indonesia's current visa list has several work categories—such as E23 and position-specific E25 variants—while the Ministry of Manpower separately regulates foreign-worker use through the Rencana Penggunaan Tenaga Kerja Asing (RPTKA) framework.

That separation matters: immigration status and manpower authorization are related but not interchangeable. See the Indonesia Work Visa guide.

Investor ITAS vs Golden Visa

Two search terms are often blended online but should not be.

E28A is an ordinary investor temporary-stay route. Current Immigration guidance allows up to two years and requires proof of at least IDR10,000,000,000 in share ownership in the sponsoring company registered with the investment authority. A director or commissioner below that share threshold is directed toward the appropriate work visa instead.

The Golden Visa family contains longer 5- and 10-year investor categories. For example, current E28C capital-market rules require at least USD350,000 for a five-year route or USD700,000 for ten years, with a separate USD1 million apartment/condominium alternative stated for the ten-year option. Other Golden Visa indexes have different company-establishment or parent-company commitments.

Compare the E28A Investor Visa with the Golden Visa before choosing a route.

Startup and founder searches

Indonesia's official framework is better described by activity than by inventing a generic “startup visa.” A founder visiting to study a project may fit C12 pre-investment; ordinary negotiations may fit C2/D2; a qualifying shareholder/operator may fit E28A; and higher-investment company-establishment structures may fit a Golden Visa category.

Company formation and licensing remain separate OSS/BKPM questions. The immigration route does not itself create or license a PT PMA.

Second Home and retirement

Indonesia's current E33 Special Residency Visa provides a distinct sponsor-free long-stay framework. The official page describes 5- or 10-year stay options and an Immigration Guarantee that must generally be fulfilled within 90 days: either at least USD130,000 deposited in the applicant's own account at a state-owned bank or an Indonesian apartment/condominium worth at least USD1,000,000.

For applicants 55 or older, E33E is a distinct retirement category with a lower USD50,000 deposit commitment plus evidence of at least USD3,000 per month in income or allowance. Because the legal tests differ, retirement is not merely a nickname for Second Home.

Family members

The visa list includes dedicated family indexes, including E31B for a spouse of an ITAS/ITAP holder, E31E for a child of an ITAS/ITAP holder, and E31H for a parent of a resident-permit holder. Some principal routes also expressly say family can accompany the holder.

Do not assume a dependant automatically receives the principal's work rights. Family status and work authorization should be checked separately for the actual index used.

Tax residence is separate from immigration status

An Indonesian stay permit does not itself settle tax residence. Current Directorate General of Taxes guidance says a foreign citizen can become an Indonesian domestic tax subject by residing in Indonesia, being present for more than 183 days in a 12-month period, or being present in a tax year with an intention to reside.

Long-duration VITAS/ITAS documents can also be evidence of an intention to reside. Remote workers and investors should therefore assess tax status independently of the visa label and obtain professional advice where needed.

2026 terminology to use carefully

  • KITAS remains a common market term, but the official system distinguishes the entry visa and the resulting ITAS limited-stay permit.
  • A C2/D2/C12 business visitor route is not a substitute for a work visa.
  • “Investor KITAS” usually points toward an investor ITAS such as E28A, not every investor or Golden Visa category.
  • “Indonesia Golden Visa” is an umbrella search term covering several current long-duration indexes rather than one threshold for every investor.
  • “Startup visa” is usually better mapped to a pre-investment visitor route, E28A or a Golden Visa investor category depending on the actual activity and investment structure.
  • Older B211 references should not be used as if they were the current name of Indonesia's residence routes.

Application workflow

  1. Define the activity you will actually perform in Indonesia.
  2. Match it to the current Immigration visa index and, for employment/business, the relevant manpower or investment rules.
  3. Confirm whether the application is sponsor-free or sponsor/company-led.
  4. Prepare the passport, financial evidence and route-specific documents.
  5. Apply through the official eVisa process or sponsor account where required.
  6. Treat published processing times as service targets, not guarantees.
  7. On residence routes, confirm issuance of the ITAS and Re-Entry Permit where the route provides them automatically.
  8. Track post-entry commitments such as investment/deposit evidence and reporting deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Does Indonesia have a digital nomad visa?

Yes. Current Immigration materials list E33G Remote Worker Special Residency Visa, designed for work for a company outside Indonesia and backed by specific income/employment evidence.

Is KITAS a visa type?

Not by itself. KITAS is widely used shorthand for a limited-stay permit/card. The underlying legal route is identified by a specific visa/stay-purpose category.

What is Indonesia's main business visa?

For ordinary meetings, negotiations and similar visitor-level business activity, the current central category is C2 Business Visitor Visa. D2 covers multiple-entry business visits and C12 covers pre-investment activity.

Can an investor work as a director?

Under E28A, current Immigration guidance permits a qualifying investor to serve on the board of directors or commissioners in the company where the person invested. It also states that a director/commissioner whose shares are below the E28A threshold should use the appropriate work visa.

Does a Golden Visa guarantee permanent residence or citizenship?

No. A 5- or 10-year visa/ITAS is not the same as an ITAP or citizenship grant.

Is Second Home a work visa?

No. The E33 page describes broader activities that may be reportable under its framework, but applicants should not treat that language as blanket permission for ordinary Indonesian employment. Use the work route when the actual activity is local employment.
