Colombia Independent Professional Visa in 2026
Colombia's M Profesional Independiente visa is the Migrant category for a foreigner who intends to practise a regulated profession in Colombia or, exceptionally, a non-regulated activity that is considered of interest to the country.
It is often described online as a “Colombia freelancer visa,” but that shorthand is too broad. This is not an unrestricted permit for any self-employed person or gig worker. Professional qualifications, the nature of the activity and the visa authority's assessment matter.
2026 income benchmark: average monthly income of at least 5 SMLMV = COP 8,754,525 over the previous six months.
Who can qualify?
Article 76 of the current consolidated Resolution 5477 covers:
- a foreigner intending to practise a regulated profession in Colombia; or
- exceptionally, a person pursuing a non-regulated activity when the activity is considered of interest to Colombia.
For a regulated profession, the regulation requires degree recognition/convalidation and compliance with the profession's licensing rules, including the professional card, licence or provisional permit from the competent professional body where required.
For work based on professional experience rather than academic formation, the applicant must provide documents or certifications supporting the claimed suitability and experience.
Income requirement
The applicant must provide a recent bank certification showing account-opening information, products, and the average balance/movement for the previous six months. The regulation requires average monthly income equal to or greater than five SMLMV.
For 2026:
COP 1,750,905 × 5 = COP 8,754,525 per month
For a second or subsequent visa of the same category, the regulation states that income must be demonstrated through Colombian bank certification.
Because SMLMV changes by calendar year, future applicants should recalculate the threshold.
Regulated profession requirements
For regulated professions, the applicant should expect to deal with:
- recognition/convalidation of the foreign degree where required;
- a professional card, licence or provisional permit from the competent Colombian professional council or authority; and
- any sector-specific requirements imposed by Colombian law.
Immigration approval does not replace professional licensing.
Is this a freelancer visa?
Only in a qualified sense. The visa can support independent professional activity, but Article 76 is built around professional practice rather than unrestricted freelance commerce.
A remote contractor serving only foreign companies may instead fit the V Digital Nomad route, if the nationality and foreign-remuneration rules are met. A founder operating a Colombian company should compare the M Partner/Owner route.
Documents
Route-specific evidence includes:
- letter describing the occupation or professional activity to be carried out in Colombia;
- degree convalidation and proof of professional licensing/authorization for a regulated profession;
- recent bank certification with the required six-month account/income history;
- proof of average monthly income of at least five SMLMV;
- health coverage in Colombia or an all-risk health policy meeting the regulation's categories for the intended stay; and
- experience/suitability evidence where the activity rests on professional experience rather than academic training.
General visa requirements, document formalities, translations and apostille/legalization rules also apply.
Application process
- Confirm the proposed activity actually fits M Professional Independent rather than a remote-work, local-employment or company-owner route.
- Complete degree recognition/professional licensing steps where required.
- Obtain the bank certification and income evidence covering six months.
- Obtain qualifying health coverage.
- File the electronic M visa application and pay the study charge.
- Respond to any document request or interview.
- If approved, pay the issuance fee within the required period and receive the e-visa.
- Complete applicable Migración Colombia registration/Cédula de Extranjería steps.
Fees in 2026
Under Resolution 3969 of 2026, the general M visa tariff under the dollar schedule is:
- study: US$56;
- issuance: US$204;
- general total: US$260.
The general euro-zone/Cuba total is €200. Nationality-based exemptions and special rates exist, and applicable stamp tax is separate from the listed visa tariff.
Processing time
Once a complete application and the study payment are in place, Cancillería has up to 30 calendar days to issue a pronouncement. Additional-document requests, interviews or consultations can extend the process.
After approval, the issuance payment generally must be made within 10 calendar days. Cancillería's current FAQ states that the e-visa is then sent within the next 10 business days.
Validity and work permission
The M Independent Professional visa can be granted for up to three years.
Its work permission is restricted to the profession or activity for which the visa was issued. A material change in professional activity should therefore be reviewed before relying on the existing visa.
Family
The category permits the principal holder to request visas for beneficiaries under Colombia's beneficiary rules. Qualifying relationship and support evidence must still be documented.
Beneficiary status should not be treated as automatically carrying the principal professional's work permission.
Absence rule
Cancillería's general Migrant visa guidance states that an M visa terminates automatically if its holder is outside Colombia for more than 180 continuous calendar days within each 365-day period counted from visa issuance.
Anyone planning long periods abroad should model this rule carefully because it affects both visa validity and long-term residence planning.
Resident (R) pathway
Current Article 90 lists M Professional Independent among the categories that can qualify for the R visa after five years of qualifying M-visa permanence, subject to the current R requirements and continuity rules.
The five-year milestone is eligibility to seek the Resident visa; it is not automatic citizenship.
Citizenship
Cancillería states that nationality-by-adoption domicile is proven by a Resident (R) visa, and the domicile period starts from R visa issuance.
The current general domicile periods are one year for Latin American/Caribbean nationals by birth, two years for Spanish nationals by birth, and five years for other foreigners, reduced to two years in defined Colombian-spouse/partner/child cases.
Tax and social-security context
A professional working locally can create Colombian tax, invoicing, VAT, health, pension and other social-security obligations. DIAN's tax-residence rules also apply independently of visa status, including the principal more-than-183-days test.
Visa eligibility should therefore be separated from tax registration and professional/business compliance.
