Colombia Digital Nomad Visa in 2026
Colombia's V Digital Nomad visa is an active Visitor (V) category under Article 46 of Resolution 5477 of 2022. It is designed for remote work performed from Colombia through digital means for foreign companies, whether the applicant is independently contracted or employed, and it also contains a narrow provision for a digital-content or information-technology entrepreneurship project of interest to Colombia.
2026 income benchmark: at least 3 SMLMV = COP 5,252,715 per month during each of the previous three months, using the 2026 SMLMV of COP 1,750,905.
Who can qualify?
The principal route conditions include:
- a passport issued by a country or territory that is exempt from a Colombian short-stay visa;
- foreign-linked remote employment or independent services supported by a letter from the foreign company or companies explaining the relationship and remuneration;
- where applicable, the underlying contract or proof that the applicant is a partner/co-owner of a foreign company and works remotely for it;
- for the digital-entrepreneur variant, a motivational letter explaining the project and financial/human resources;
- bank statements showing the required income over the last three months; and
- health insurance covering the risks listed by the regulation for the planned stay in Colombia.
The nationality restriction is important. The V Digital Nomad category is not open to every passport holder; Article 46 expressly requires a short-stay visa-exempt nationality.
Income requirement
The rule is three current minimum monthly wages during the last three months.
For 2026:
COP 1,750,905 × 3 = COP 5,252,715 per month
Because the threshold is indexed to SMLMV, applicants filing in a future calendar year should recalculate it rather than relying on this 2026 peso figure.
Can freelancers qualify?
Potentially, but only when the activity genuinely fits the foreign-linked remote-work framework. Article 46 expressly contemplates an independent professional providing services remotely, but the work must be for foreign companies and the visa does not allow paid activity for a person or legal entity domiciled in Colombia.
A person who wants to build a Colombian client base should not treat this visa as a general freelancer permit. Depending on the proposed activity, the M Independent Professional route may be more relevant, although that route itself is primarily profession-based rather than an unrestricted gig-work visa.
What about startup founders?
Article 46 includes a narrow digital-entrepreneur concept for a project involving digital content or information technology that is of interest to Colombia. The applicant provides a motivational letter describing the project and resources.
That provision should not be described as a general Colombian startup visa. A founder establishing/owning an operating Colombian commercial company should compare the M Partner / Business Owner Visa, which has a separate 100-SMLMV capital test.
Documents
The core route-specific evidence includes:
- valid passport from a short-stay visa-exempt jurisdiction;
- foreign company letter in Spanish or English describing the work relationship and remuneration;
- contract where applicable;
- proof of foreign-company ownership and remote work where applicable;
- motivational letter for the qualifying digital-entrepreneur variant;
- bank statements demonstrating at least three SMLMV per month for the previous three months; and
- qualifying health-insurance policy for the intended stay.
General visa formalities under Resolution 5477 also apply. Foreign documents may require apostille/legalization and official translation depending on language and document type.
Application process
- Confirm the applicant's passport is on Colombia's short-stay visa-exempt list.
- Confirm the work remains foreign-linked and does not involve Colombian remuneration.
- Gather employment/service/company evidence, bank statements and health insurance.
- Apply through Colombia's electronic visa process and pay the study charge.
- Respond promptly to any request for additional documents or interview.
- If approved, pay the issuance fee within the permitted period and receive the electronic visa.
- Check Migración Colombia registration and Cédula de Extranjería requirements applicable to the visa's duration and circumstances.
Fees in 2026
Resolution 3969 of 2026 sets the general V visa charges at US$56 for study + US$138 for issuance = US$194 under the dollar schedule. In the euro-zone/Cuba schedule the general total is €150.
Nationality-specific exemptions and special rates exist, and applicable stamp tax is not included in the stated visa tariff. Applicants should use Cancillería's current cost tool for their nationality and filing location.
Processing time
Once the application is complete and the study charge has been paid, Cancillería has up to 30 calendar days to issue a pronouncement. The period can extend when consultations, additional evidence or an interview are required.
Once a visa is approved, the applicant generally has 10 calendar days to pay the issuance charge. Cancillería's FAQ states the e-visa is sent within the following 10 business days after payment.
Validity and beneficiaries
The V Digital Nomad visa may be granted for up to two years. Article 46 allows applications for beneficiaries of the principal holder.
Beneficiary status is separate from the principal holder's work authorization. Family members should confirm what activity their own visa permits before accepting employment or providing services.
Local work restriction
This is one of the route's most important limitations: the visa does not permit work or remunerated activity with a natural person or legal entity domiciled in Colombia.
If the applicant begins taking Colombian clients, enters local employment or materially changes the economic basis of the stay, they should assess a suitable M visa instead of relying on the digital-nomad approval.
Does it lead to a Resident visa?
Not directly through the five-year M accumulation rule. The Visitor (V) category is visitor status. Article 90's accumulated-time route lists qualifying M visa categories, not V Digital Nomad.
A digital nomad planning permanent settlement should therefore plan a later switch to an appropriate M category rather than assuming two years of V status count toward the standard five-year M-to-R pathway.
Tax residence
Visa classification does not control tax residence. DIAN states that one principal tax-residence test is presence in Colombia for more than 183 days in any rolling 365-day period, counting entry and exit days, with other statutory tests also potentially relevant.
A digital nomad can therefore become Colombian tax resident even though the immigration category requires foreign-linked work. Foreign payroll, independent contracting, foreign tax credits, treaty treatment, VAT and social-security questions require individual tax advice.
Citizenship
Colombian nationality by adoption uses domicile, and Cancillería states that domicile is demonstrated by a Resident (R) visa. The citizenship residence clock therefore should not be presented as beginning simply because a person receives a V Digital Nomad visa.
Read the Colombia immigration hub for the R-visa and nationality sequence.
