Thailand Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) in 2026

Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is the official route most closely matching searches for a Thailand digital nomad or freelancer visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs created it for workcation applicants, Thai soft-power activities and qualifying family members.

Core rules

The national program currently provides:

  • 5-year visa validity with multiple entries;
  • up to 180 days per entry;
  • one extension of up to another 180 days per entry through Immigration;
  • financial evidence of at least THB 500,000; and
  • eligibility for digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers under the workcation purpose.

After reaching the maximum 180+180 days for one entry, the holder must leave Thailand and may re-enter while the visa remains valid.

Who qualifies under workcation?

Official MFA materials accept an overseas employment contract/certificate or a professional portfolio showing digital-nomad, remote-worker, foreign-talent or freelancer status. Individual embassies can require additional jurisdiction-specific proof such as local residence, several months of bank statements or police clearance.

The national THB 500,000 threshold is therefore only the baseline. Always use the checklist of the embassy or Thai e-Visa jurisdiction actually handling the application.

DTV is not a Thai work permit

This distinction is critical. A Royal Thai Embassy page updated in August 2026 describes DTV as a special tourist visa and states that holders are prohibited from obtaining a Thai work permit under that status, working for Thai companies, or freelancing for Thai clients.

DTV is best understood as permission to stay while carrying out the qualifying foreign-linked workcation activity. If the real plan is employment by a Thai company, compare the Non-Immigrant B + work permit route.

Family

DTV also has a family category for the spouse and children under 20 years old of a DTV holder. Relationship evidence such as marriage, birth or adoption records is required. Current embassy checklists can require each dependant to show their own financial/documentary evidence, so do not assume the principal applicant's file automatically covers the family.

Application process

  1. Identify the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate or Thai e-Visa channel with jurisdiction over your current residence.
  2. Prepare passport, photograph and proof of current location/residence.
  3. Prepare financial evidence meeting the current THB 500,000 rule in the form required by that post.
  4. Prepare workcation evidence: overseas employment documentation or a professional portfolio.
  5. Submit the application and any additional post-specific documents.
  6. After entry, track the 180-day permitted stay separately from the five-year visa validity.
  7. If needed, apply to Immigration for one extension of up to 180 days for that entry.

Fees

The MFA's national launch material states a THB 10,000 visa fee. Overseas posts charge local-currency equivalents; for example, current US posts publish US$400, while London publishes £300. Use the fee displayed by your actual post at filing time.

Tax residence

DTV does not create a tax exemption. Thailand's Revenue Code treats a person staying in Thailand for an aggregate of 180 days or more in a tax year as a Thai tax resident. Immigration permission, source of income, remittance timing and treaty position are separate questions, so long-stay remote workers should obtain appropriate tax advice.

Does DTV lead to permanent residence?

Not automatically. The ordinary Thai permanent-residence system is a separate quota process. Immigration guidance for the standard quota route generally expects three consecutive years of qualifying one-year Non-Immigrant extensions. DTV's five-year visa validity should not be presented as a permanent-residence clock.

DTV vs LTR Work-from-Thailand

DTV has the lower entry barrier and is designed for broad workcation use. The LTR Work-from-Thailand Professional route has much higher income and employer thresholds but offers a 5+5-year residence framework and annual rather than 90-day reporting.

Common mistakes

  • treating five-year visa validity as five years of uninterrupted stay;
  • assuming THB 500,000 is the only document requirement at every embassy;
  • using DTV for Thai-company employment or Thai-client freelance work;
  • overlooking tax residence after enough days in Thailand; and
  • assuming DTV automatically creates a permanent-residence or citizenship path.

Frequently asked questions

Is DTV Thailand's digital nomad visa?

Yes for practical search intent. The official name is Destination Thailand Visa, and workcation explicitly covers digital nomads and remote workers.

How long can I stay each time?

Up to 180 days per entry, with one extension of up to another 180 days for that entry.

Can I work for Thai clients?

Current official embassy guidance says DTV should not be used for Thai-company work or Thai-client freelancing.

Do I need THB 500,000 in cash permanently?

The program requires financial evidence of at least THB 500,000, but the exact statement period and acceptable evidence are administered by the filing post.
