Malaysia Visa and Immigration Options in 2026
Malaysia has several official pathways for international remote workers, expatriate employees, technology founders, long-stay residents and prospective investors. They are not interchangeable. A pass designed for foreign-linked remote work does not automatically authorize Malaysian employment, and a long-stay or investor programme does not necessarily create permanent residence.
Verified 15 September 2026: Malaysia's Employment Pass salary framework changed on 1 June 2026. Category I now starts at RM20,000 per month, Category II at RM10,000–19,999, and Category III at RM5,000–9,999. The Investor Pass also changed on 13 March 2026, removing the “Existing Investor” category.

Digital nomads: DE Rantau
The official programme matching “Malaysia digital nomad visa” searches is DE Rantau Nomad Pass, administered by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). It is based on a Professional Visit Pass rather than a generic permanent residence category.
MDEC's published foreign-nomad materials distinguish remote employees from freelancers. The long-published digital-professional baseline is income above USD24,000 per year, and MDEC expanded eligible occupations beyond IT/digital roles in 2024 to include professions such as founders, senior executives, tax/accounting, legal, writing, business development and public relations roles. Because application evidence has continued to evolve, applicants should use the current live checklist for their profession rather than assuming an older FAQ covers every expanded occupation.

Malaysian employment: Employment Pass
For ordinary employment with a Malaysian organization, the Employment Pass (EP) is the central expatriate route. The employer applies through the relevant ESD/MYXpats or approving-agency process, and the holder may work only for the company named on the pass.
From 1 June 2026, the revised minimum monthly salaries are:
- Category I: RM20,000 and above, with a structured duration of up to 10 years;
- Category II: RM10,000–19,999, up to 10 years and subject to the current replacement/succession-plan framework; and
- Category III: RM5,000–9,999, up to 5 years and subject to the current replacement/succession-plan framework.
Applications and renewals submitted on or after 1 June 2026 must use the revised policy. Read the Malaysia Employment Pass guide.
Technology founders: MTEP
The Malaysia Tech Entrepreneur Programme (MTEP) is the purpose-built government programme for foreign technology founders and co-founders. It separates New Entrepreneurs from Established Entrepreneurs.
New Entrepreneurs use a PVP-MTE generally valid for one year and renewable for another year. Established Entrepreneurs can qualify for an RP-MTE for up to five years, renewable for another five. The programmes have different sponsor, track-record and family rules, so “Malaysia startup visa” should not be treated as one generic founder permit.
Read the MTEP founder guide.
Long-stay residence: MM2H
The current federal Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme has four tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum and SEZ/SFZ. Current fixed-deposit requirements are USD150,000 for Silver, USD500,000 for Gold, USD1,000,000 for Platinum, and USD65,000 (age 21–49) or USD32,000 (age 50+) for the SEZ/SFZ tier.
Property purchase is compulsory after approval, and younger participants generally have a 90-day annual presence requirement that can be met by eligible family members under the current rules. Crucially, Silver, Gold and SEZ/SFZ should not be marketed as general work permits. Platinum has broader business/investment and career benefits under the official category rules.
Read the MM2H guide.
Prospective investors: Investor Pass
Malaysia's Investor Pass is a temporary multiple-entry facility for investment activity, not an investor-residence card. It generally provides six months with a possible additional six months, and it does not allow paid employment or dependants.
Effective 13 March 2026, only New Investor and Investor in Pipeline remain. A person who already owns a Malaysian company or is already a director is not eligible under the revised policy and is directed toward the appropriate Employment Pass or Professional Visit Pass route instead.

What about Premium Visa Programme (PVIP)?
Malaysia also operates the Premium Visa Programme as a high-value long-term option. Current Immigration material describes a 20-year framework with substantial income/net-worth, fixed-deposit and participation-fee requirements. It overlaps heavily with MM2H/investor search intent, so this guide treats it as a comparison option rather than presenting another generic “golden visa.”
Family rights differ substantially
DE Rantau, Employment Pass, MTEP and MM2H each have their own dependant rules. For example, New Entrepreneur MTEP holders do not have the same family privileges as Established Entrepreneur RP-MTE holders. MM2H permits a broad dependant group under current programme rules, while the Investor Pass does not allow dependants. Always verify the specific principal category before assuming a spouse can work or a child can study without a separate pass.
Tax and social security
Immigration status does not determine Malaysian tax residence by itself. Malaysia's Income Tax Act uses several residence tests; 182 days is the best-known general threshold, but linked-period tests can also matter. Foreign workers and expatriates with qualifying work passes may also fall within current PERKESO/SOCSO contribution rules. Remote workers should not assume that a DE Rantau pass creates a tax exemption.
Permanent residence and citizenship
None of DE Rantau, an ordinary Employment Pass, MM2H or the Investor Pass should be described as an automatic permanent-residence or citizenship pathway. Malaysia has separate permanent-residence and nationality rules. Long pass validity is a right to stay under that programme, not a promise of PR.
Common mistakes
- Using an old pre-June-2026 Employment Pass salary table.
- Treating DE Rantau as unrestricted permission for any Malaysian employment.
- Assuming MM2H Silver or Gold automatically permits a career or business activity.
- Treating the Investor Pass as permanent residence or a work permit.
- Using legacy MM2H requirements instead of the current Silver/Gold/Platinum/SEZ framework.
- Assuming all MTEP founder categories have identical family rights and duration.
Frequently asked questions
Does Malaysia have a digital nomad visa?
The official programme closest to that search term is the DE Rantau Nomad Pass.
What is the minimum salary for a Malaysia Employment Pass in 2026?
For applications under the revised policy effective 1 June 2026, Category III starts at RM5,000, Category II at RM10,000 and Category I at RM20,000 per month.
Is MM2H a work visa?
Not generally. Work/business rights vary by tier; the official Platinum tier has broader career/business benefits, while Silver, Gold and SEZ/SFZ do not provide general career rights.
Can an existing Malaysian company owner use the Investor Pass?
Under the revision effective 13 March 2026, an existing owner or director is not eligible for the Investor Pass and should assess the appropriate EP or PVP route.
Does a long-term Malaysian pass guarantee permanent residence?
No. Programme validity and permanent residence are separate legal concepts.
