Immigration and Visa Options for Digital Nomads, Founders and Investors in Brazil
Brazil has several immigration pathways relevant to globally mobile professionals, but they are not interchangeable. In 2026 the country has a dedicated Digital Nomad temporary-residence framework, separate investment residence for an individual investing in a Brazilian company, a corporate-investment route for qualifying administrators and executives, and a distinct real-estate investor residence authorization.
The four core ReloTide routes are:
- Brazil Digital Nomad Visa under CNIg Resolution 45/2021;
- Brazil Entrepreneur / Individual Investor Residence under RN 13/2017;
- Brazil Company Executive / Corporate Investor Residence under RN 11/2017; and
- Brazil Real-Estate Investor Residence under RN 36/2018.
Verified 15 September 2026: Brazil does not have a generic open “freelancer visa” that lets any foreign freelancer relocate and invoice Brazilian clients. The Digital Nomad route is built around remote work for a foreign employer/source, while local business activity and management need an appropriate residence basis.
Brazil immigration routes at a glance
| Route | Main 2026 legal / financial gate | Typical applicant | Residence structure | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Digital Nomad | US$1,500/month foreign-source means or US$18,000 bank funds, plus foreign remote-work evidence | Remote employee or qualifying remote service provider | Up to 1 year, renewable for an equal period | | Entrepreneur / Individual Investor | Standard investment R$500,000+; qualifying innovation/science/technology projects may be considered from R$150,000 | Founder or individual investing personal foreign capital into a Brazilian legal entity | Official RN 13 guidance states residence is indefinite | | Company Executive / Corporate Investor | Generally R$600,000 per executive, or R$150,000 with commitment to create at least 10 jobs within 2 years | Administrator, manager, director or executive representing an investing company/group | Official RN 11 guidance states residence is indefinite | | Real-Estate Investor | R$1,000,000 urban property, reduced to R$700,000 in North/Northeast | Property investor using own foreign-origin funds | 4 years, then possible change to indefinite residence if conditions remain met |
Digital nomads and remote workers
Brazil's Resolution 45/2021 defines a digital nomad as an immigrant able to perform professional activity remotely through information and communications technology for a foreign employer, without Brazilian employment.
The applicant must prove either:
- foreign-source means of at least US$1,500 per month; or
- available bank funds of at least US$18,000.
The regulation also requires remote-work evidence such as an employment or service contract and a declaration that the work can be performed remotely. The initial residence period is up to one year and can be renewed for an equal period.
The route should not be treated as a permit for ordinary employment with a Brazilian employer. A Brazilian consular page also warns that the digital-nomad option is not available to business owners, so owner-founders should examine the investment routes instead of assuming their own foreign company automatically solves the eligibility issue.

Founder and individual-investor residence
Brazil's RN 13/2017 covers a foreign individual investing their own foreign-origin resources into a Brazilian legal entity in a project with potential to generate employment or income.
The standard threshold is R$500,000 with an investment/business plan. RN 13 also permits a lower investment of at least R$150,000 for entrepreneurs investing in innovation, basic/applied research, scientific or technological activity when the project satisfies the regulation's innovation criteria. The lower band is not an automatic startup discount; the project must fit the substantive conditions.
The current MJSP guidance describes the residence period under RN 13 as indefinite. The application is handled electronically through MigranteWeb and reviewed by the labor-immigration unit.

Company executives and corporate investors
A separate framework, RN 11/2017, applies to an administrator, manager, director or executive with management powers representing a company, group or conglomerate that makes qualifying foreign investment in a Brazilian company.
Following the 2024 amendment, the principal capital test is R$600,000 of foreign investment per called executive. A lower R$150,000 investment can qualify where the company commits to create at least 10 new jobs within the two years following installation or the executive's entry, subject to the regulation's evidence requirements.
This is different from RN 13: the investing party is the corporate structure and the immigration applicant is the qualifying management representative.

Real-estate investment residence
Brazil also has a residence authorization for individuals who invest their own foreign-origin resources in urban property under RN 36/2018.
The standard minimum is R$1,000,000. For property in Brazil's North and Northeast regions, the rule permits a 30% reduction, making the threshold R$700,000. Multiple urban properties may be combined to reach the threshold, and financing may cover the portion above the required qualifying investment.
The residence is initially four years. If the investment conditions remain satisfied, the investor can seek conversion to residence for an indefinite period. The investor must spend at least 14 days in Brazil in each two-year period counted from Federal Police registration to preserve the special absence protection.

What about freelancers and self-employed professionals?
Brazil does not currently present a general low-capital residence category equivalent to Portugal's D2 independent-professional route or Spain's ordinary self-employment route.
A remote independent professional may fit the Digital Nomad framework where the work remains foreign-linked and the evidence fits RN 45. A person intending to establish and operate a Brazilian business should analyze RN 13 or another specific business/work authorization instead. Simply registering a Brazilian company or obtaining a tax number does not by itself create immigration status.
Mercosur nationals should compare the regional residence route
Nationals of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay can access the Mercosur residence framework administered by the Federal Police. That nationality-based route may be considerably simpler than an investment route and should be evaluated first by an eligible applicant. Brazil also has additional border/nationality-specific residence rules for some neighboring-country nationals.
ReloTide does not treat Mercosur residence as a generic business visa because eligibility depends primarily on nationality rather than professional profile.
Family reunification
Brazil's family-reunification framework is governed by Interministerial Ordinance 12/2018. Current Federal Police guidance recognizes, subject to the detailed conditions, spouses/partners, children and stepchildren, parents, certain grandparents/grandchildren and qualifying siblings, among other defined family relationships.
Family residence is a separate immigration basis; applicants should not assume that a principal route's income or investment evidence automatically satisfies every family-document requirement.
Government fees and timing
For residence applications handled under the standard Federal Police/MJSP fee system, the official service pages currently list:
- R$168.13 — processing/evaluation of a residence-authorization request; and
- R$204.77 — issuance of the CRNM residence card,
when the fees are applicable. Consular visa fees are separate and can vary by visa class, nationality and filing post, so a fee published by one Brazilian consulate should not be presented as a universal worldwide fee.
The MJSP's general residence-authorization service page currently gives an estimated service time of 130 to 180 calendar days, while consular visa timing, MigranteWeb review, appointments and Federal Police registration can create different end-to-end timelines.
Tax residence and social-security context
A residence authorization does not itself determine every tax result. The Receita Federal states that a person entering with a temporary visa generally becomes Brazilian tax resident when they complete 184 days of presence, consecutive or not, within a 12-month period, unless another rule makes them resident earlier (for example certain Brazilian employment situations).
Digital nomads should therefore model Brazilian tax residence even though their employer/client is abroad. Founders and investors should separately review Brazilian company tax, distributions, capital registration, payroll and social-security obligations. Immigration eligibility is not tax advice.
Indefinite residence and naturalization
Brazil's system uses residence for an indefinite period rather than an EU-style permanent-residence card.
The RN 13 individual-investor and RN 11 corporate-executive guidance currently describe those residence authorizations as indefinite. The real-estate investor route starts with four years and can be changed to indefinite residence if the investment remains compliant.
Brazilian ordinary naturalization is separate. The Ministry of Justice currently uses four years of residence for an indefinite period as the ordinary baseline, together with Portuguese-language ability and the criminal-record requirements. The residence period may be reduced to one year in defined cases such as having a Brazilian spouse/partner or Brazilian child, and also for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries; defined professional/scientific/service cases can use a two-year period.
This means a temporary Digital Nomad year should not be casually advertised as the start of a four-year citizenship clock. The naturalization authority's current guidance counts the relevant period from residence for an indefinite term.

Frequently asked questions
Does Brazil have a digital nomad visa in 2026?
Yes. RN 45/2021 remains listed by the Ministry of Justice and there is no express revocation shown in the official migration-law repository.
What is the Brazil digital nomad income requirement?
At least US$1,500 per month from a foreign source, or at least US$18,000 in available bank funds, plus the required remote-work evidence.
Does Brazil have a freelancer visa?
Not a generic open freelancer category. Foreign-linked remote professionals may fit the Digital Nomad route; local business activity requires a proper work/investment residence basis.
How much must an entrepreneur invest in Brazil?
The standard RN 13 threshold is R$500,000. A qualifying innovation/science/technology project may be considered at R$150,000 to below R$500,000, but only when the substantive RN 13 innovation conditions are met.
What is the corporate executive investment threshold?
Current RN 11 guidance uses R$600,000 per executive, or R$150,000 with a commitment to create at least 10 new jobs within two years, subject to the regulation.
How much property is needed for the real-estate residence route?
Generally R$1,000,000 in qualifying urban property, or R$700,000 in the North or Northeast regions.
Does buying property immediately give indefinite residence?
No. RN 36 provides an initial four-year residence period. Conversion to an indefinite period is available later if the investment and other conditions remain satisfied.
How long before ordinary Brazilian naturalization?
The general baseline is four years of indefinite residence, subject to the other naturalization requirements. Statutory reductions apply to specific categories.
