Bangladesh Visa and Immigration Options in 2026
Bangladesh does not use one single “residence visa” for every foreign national. The correct pathway depends on why you are entering: employment, investment and management, a business visit, study, family dependency, or eligibility for a No Visa Required (NVR) endorsement. The entry visa and the permission to work can also be separate administrative steps.
The national Bangladesh Online MRV portal handles online forms for new visas, extensions and NVR. Its published process is to complete the online form, print it, and submit the printed form with supporting documents and the applicable fee to the competent Bangladesh mission or visa office. Consular requirements and fees can differ by nationality and post.
Route comparison
| Route | Typical purpose | Employment rights | Main authority layer | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Employment and work permit | Taking a job or qualifying technical assignment | Requires the correct E/E2/E3/E-1 context and work authorization where applicable | Mission/DIP + BIDA/BEPZA/competent authority | | PI investor visa | Investment and management of an eligible private-sector business | A PI visa is not a substitute for the work permit required when the investor works | Mission/DIP + BIDA/BEPZA/BEZA | | Business visa | Trade, commerce, meetings and investment visits | No paid or unpaid employment | Bangladesh mission / DIP | | Family/dependant visa | Joining an eligible principal visa holder | Dependant categories do not automatically authorize work | Bangladesh mission / DIP | | Student visa | Study or qualifying research at an approved institution | Published S/FS guidance prohibits paid or unpaid employment | Bangladesh mission / DIP / education authorities | | NVR endorsement | Eligible Bangladesh-origin foreign citizens/family, and a defined high-value investor case | NVR gives entry/stay privileges; do not treat it as a work permit | Mission / DIP |
The work visa and work permit are not the same thing
This is the most important planning distinction for foreign employees. BIDA states that a work permit is mandatory for foreign nationals seeking employment within the sectors it administers. Its current service guidance also limits expatriate employment to approved/registered establishments, generally expects the role to be one for which local expertise is not available, requires the foreign worker to be at least 18, and applies expatriate staffing ratios of 5% in industrial enterprises and 20% in commercial enterprises, including top management.
BIDA's published FAQ maps foreign investors to the PI category and employees to E2/E3 categories for work-permit purposes. Mission pages may use broader labels such as E and E-1. That is why the employer should coordinate the BIDA/BEPZA/other competent-authority recommendation and work-permit sequence rather than assuming a visa sticker alone completes the employment process.
Current BIDA work-permit service benchmark
BIDA's Commercial Wing service table lists a BDT 5,000 per individual/year fee and a 16-working-day service target for a new commercial-office work permit, subject to inter-ministerial working-committee approval. This is a BIDA service benchmark, not a promise for the entire visa-to-employment process.
The same BIDA material asks certain branch/liaison/joint-venture/100%-foreign-owned company cases for an encashment certificate showing at least USD 50,000 of inward remittance as initial establishment cost. That document condition should not be rewritten as a universal minimum investment for every PI visa applicant.
Is there a Bangladesh digital nomad, startup or freelancer visa?
In the current official MRV, mission and BIDA category material reviewed on 16 September 2026, we did not identify a dedicated digital-nomad, remote-worker, startup-founder or freelancer visa category. A person working for an overseas employer or clients should not assume that tourist, business, family, student or NVR status authorizes work performed from Bangladesh merely because the payer is outside Bangladesh.
Founders should instead separate three questions: company/investment registration, the correct PI or business-entry basis, and any work authorization required for the role they personally perform. See the PI investor guide and the existing Entrepreneur visa taxonomy for comparative discovery—not as a statement that Bangladesh operates a generic entrepreneur visa.
Consular validity and fees vary
Bangladesh missions publish materially different details for initial visas. For example, the Beijing mission's current B-visa page describes up to six months, while Seoul distinguishes a 90-day single-entry business visa from a six-month multiple-entry visa with a 30-day maximum stay per visit. Employment pages also differ in how E/E-1 validity is presented. Treat the rules of your competent mission as controlling for the application it accepts.
Visa fees are similarly nationality/post specific. The central MRV portal publishes a nationality fee table, while individual missions publish their own current consular schedules. Always check the mission that will receive your application.
Family, students and NVR
Bangladesh missions publish dependant labels including FE, FPI and FS, tied respectively to employment, investor and student principals, alongside other family codes. Relationship evidence and the principal's passport/visa are normally central documents. Published mission guidance expressly restricts employment for several dependant categories.
The student S category is for qualifying study/research at government-approved educational institutions. Current Los Angeles mission guidance says paid or unpaid employment is prohibited for S and FS holders and describes extension through DIP up to the course tenure, subject to the relevant institution and clearance requirements.
NVR is different. Current Washington mission guidance says eligible non-SAARC foreign citizens of Bangladeshi origin, along with spouse and children, can receive NVR. It also states that a foreign citizen with investment in Bangladesh worth USD 5 million can qualify when supported by a BIDA/BEPZA/BEZA document. The endorsement remains valid with the passport and permits repeated entry and stay without a time restriction during that passport validity. Those entry/stay privileges should not be presented as automatic work authorization.
Permanent residence and citizenship
Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs currently publishes a contact point for citizenship, citizenship through marriage or as an investor, dual citizenship, and a permanent residence rights certificate. However, the current public operational page reviewed for this guide does not publish a complete, reconciled set of investor thresholds and procedures. Older investment materials contain figures that should not be promoted as a current guaranteed “citizenship by investment” product.
If permanent residence or investor citizenship is the objective, confirm the live requirements directly with the Ministry of Home Affairs before committing capital or structuring an immigration plan.
Tax is a separate analysis
Visa or work-permit status does not by itself decide Bangladesh tax residence. Individual residence, Bangladesh-source income, employer payroll/withholding and business presence should be checked under the current Income Tax Act, 2023 and National Board of Revenue guidance. Founders and remote professionals should obtain Bangladesh tax advice for their actual travel days, income sources and company structure.
Practical application sequence
- Identify the genuine purpose of entry and the category your competent mission accepts.
- Obtain the required Bangladesh sponsor, employer, institution or investment-authority recommendation.
- Complete the online MRV form, print it and prepare post-specific documents/fees.
- Obtain the entry visa or NVR endorsement.
- If you will work, complete the separate BIDA/BEPZA/other competent work-authorization process before relying on the role as legally authorized employment.
- Track expiry, extension, tax clearance and employer/company changes before they become urgent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work in Bangladesh with a business visa?
No. Current official mission guidance describes B as a business-visit category and expressly prohibits paid or unpaid employment.
Does a PI visa remove the work-permit requirement?
No. BIDA's own work-permit materials include PI-type visa holders and require the separate work-permit process when the investor is working in the relevant enterprise.
Does Bangladesh have a digital nomad visa in 2026?
We did not identify a dedicated digital-nomad/remote-worker category in the current official category material reviewed on 16 September 2026.
Is USD 50,000 the minimum investment for a PI visa?
Do not use it that way. BIDA publishes that amount as an inward-remittance/initial-establishment-cost document condition in specified company-office work-permit contexts.
Can an NVR holder stay indefinitely?
Current Washington mission guidance says the NVR endorsement is valid with the passport and permits repeated entry and stay without a time restriction during that passport's validity. It is not a substitute for separate work authorization where work rules apply.
Where can I compare the wider region?
See Asia relocation and immigration guides.
