Aruba Indefinite Residence Permit in 2026
DIMAS uses the term residence permit for an indefinite period for a residence status with no end date. Searchers often call it Aruba permanent residence, but the official eligibility rules should be followed rather than assuming that any temporary permit converts automatically.
The 10-year / 120-month rule
The DIMAS indefinite-residence page says an applicant must be able to prove at least 10 years of legal residence in Aruba. DIMAS explains this as having held temporary residence permits or qualifying declarations for a total of at least 120 months.
Continuity conditions
DIMAS also states that:
- the applicant must be registered in the population register at the relevant point and provide proof;
- the applicant must not have had the disqualifying gaps/permit history described on the official page; and
- extended absence from Aruba can affect eligibility, subject to the official exceptions such as health or study.
The English DIMAS wording on one bullet is awkward, so applicants should use their full permit/declaration history and ask DIMAS to confirm how any gap or prior status is counted rather than relying on a paraphrase.
Work rights
For a person 18 or older, DIMAS states that the indefinite residence permit gives permission to work. A minor can receive the residence status without work permission, with a work-enabled permit possible on request according to DIMAS.
That is materially different from family, student or retiree temporary permits, which do not automatically provide ordinary paid-work rights.
Documents
DIMAS lists:
- judicial documentation for applicants aged 18–65;
- evidence concerning the previously paid guarantee deposit; and
- all previous permits/declarations and payment certificates.
Because the route depends on a long historical record, preserving old permits, declarations and population-registration evidence is especially important.
Indefinite residence is not citizenship
An indefinite Aruba residence permit is an immigration status. It does not by itself make the holder a Dutch national, and nationality/naturalization has separate Kingdom rules and procedures.
Admission by law is also different
The LTU recognizes certain categories admitted by operation of law. That is legally distinct from acquiring an indefinite permit after the 10-year residence history. Do not combine the two concepts merely because both can result in durable residence rights.
Processing
The DIMAS FAQ gives a general legal handling period of 12 weeks, with a possible additional 12-week decision period after formal notice. Long-residence cases can require careful verification of the full historical record.
Tax residence
Even indefinite immigration residence does not replace the tax-residence analysis. Departamento di Impuesto looks at durable personal ties to Aruba for individual fiscal residence.
