Antigua and Barbuda Student Permit in 2026

Foreign nationals coming to Antigua and Barbuda primarily to study generally need a student permit unless a published exemption applies. The Immigration Department says the student permit should ordinarily be approved before the student arrives in the country.

That makes the route materially different from entering for a holiday and then deciding to enroll. The Department's FAQ says a person who enters as a visitor should not assume that visitor status can simply be converted into student status after arrival.

Who needs a student permit?

The Immigration Department's Student Permit FAQ describes the permit for non-immigrant students attending an approved educational institution. It also notes an exception for qualifying OECS nationals with indefinite status.

Nationality, age, institution and existing immigration status can change the documentation required, so confirm the current position before travel.

Apply before arrival

The Department's published guidance is unusually clear on timing: student authorization should be obtained before arrival. A prospective student should therefore coordinate with the school and the competent education/immigration authorities before booking a long-term move.

A visitor admission stamp is not a substitute for the student permit.

The current student FAQ lists evidence such as:

  • approval or acceptance from the Ministry of Education where required;
  • acceptance letter from the educational institution;
  • valid passport;
  • proof that tuition and living costs can be supported;
  • health evidence;
  • birth certificate;

  • recent photograph; and
  • custody or guardianship documentation for minors when relevant.

The public FAQ requires proof that the student has adequate support, but ReloTide found no current universal fixed-dollar maintenance threshold published on the student-permit page for every applicant.

Do not substitute an unofficial bank-balance figure for the Department's actual evidence request. The institution's tuition invoice, sponsor evidence and living arrangements can all affect what a credible support file looks like.

Validity and renewal

The Immigration Department says student permits are usually issued for one year at a time and should be renewed annually while the course continues and the student remains eligible.

Students should begin renewal preparation before expiry and keep school enrollment and immigration status continuous.

Can a student work in Antigua and Barbuda?

The published rule is restrictive. The Student Permit FAQ says a student is not permitted to engage in gainful or unpaid occupation under the student permit, except for unpaid activity directly connected with the course of study.

The Department also says a work permit may be required for an internship lasting more than three months or where the activity otherwise falls outside the limited study-linked exception.

Do not assume that a student visa automatically includes part-time work rights. If paid work or a substantial internship is planned, check the Antigua and Barbuda work permit rules before starting.

Student permit versus resident permit

The Immigration Department separately lists Class C student residence in its Resident Permit FAQ. That framework says students can qualify for student resident status after one year in the relevant category.

The ordinary student permit used to study and the longer-term resident permit are therefore not interchangeable. A student who wants resident status should make the separate application when eligible rather than assuming annual student-permit renewals automatically create permanent residence.
