Antigua and Barbuda Visa and Residency Options in 2026
Antigua and Barbuda offers several legal ways to enter, work, study and establish residence, but the labels matter. An entry visa, work permit, student permit, resident permit and citizenship are different legal statuses managed under different rules.
The most important 2026 change for remote workers is that the official Nomad Digital Residence (NDR) programme has ended. The government application page states that the programme ended on 15 November 2025. Older articles describing a live two-year Antigua digital nomad visa are therefore out of date for new applicants.
This guide was checked on 16 September 2026 against the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Immigration, the Laws of Antigua and Barbuda, the government NDR site, the Citizenship by Investment Unit and the Inland Revenue Department.
Quick comparison of Antigua and Barbuda immigration routes
| Route | Best for | Core rule | Current 2026 status | |---|---|---|---| | Nomad Digital Residence | Remote workers employed abroad | Former two-year remote-work status with US$50,000 income threshold | Closed to new applications since 15 Nov 2025 | | Work permit | Employees and self-employed non-citizens | Labour Department work authorization; immigration stay permission remains separate | Active | | Residence permit | Long-term lawful residents and qualifying categories | General residence framework, usually after qualifying lawful residence | Active | | Marriage/family residence | Spouses of Antiguan and Barbudan citizens | Residence category after at least one year of qualifying marriage | Active | | Student permit | Non-immigrant students | Prior student authorization; usually one year at a time | Active | | Investor/entrepreneur residence | Business owners/investors already operating locally | Residence category after qualifying period tied to work permits | Active | | Independent means / retirement residence | Homeowners, retirees and financially independent residents | Residence categories with prior lawful-residence requirements | Active; official FAQ contains timing inconsistency that must be confirmed | | Citizenship by investment | Applicants seeking direct nationality through an approved contribution/investment | CIU route to citizenship, not a residence permit | Active |
Entry visa and visitor status are not residence
The Immigration Department's general visa information says visa-exempt holiday or business visitors may generally remain for up to six months if they have a valid passport, onward or return ticket, accommodation and sufficient means. Nationality-specific rules still apply.
An eVisa is only permission to travel and seek entry. It does not grant residence or local employment rights. The Department's extension FAQs are especially important because they explain that a bona fide visitor remains a visitor even after obtaining a work permit. Work authorization comes from Labour; permission to remain comes from Immigration.
Visitors needing more time must apply before their authorised stay expires. Ordinary visitor extensions are not a substitute for a residence route.
Work permits: employment permission, not automatic residence
Division F of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code generally prohibits a non-citizen from employment or self-employment without a work permit unless an exemption applies. The 2020 amendment increased the statutory work-permit application fee to EC$100.
A June 2026 Cabinet update also confirms that employers seeking work permits must demonstrate genuine local recruitment efforts and that vacancies linked to work-permit applications are expected to be advertised broadly, including through recognised media and the One Stop Employment Centre.
A work permit by itself does not create a right of abode. Immigration separately endorses or extends the holder's lawful stay. Read the Antigua and Barbuda work permit guide.
Residence permits and the class system
The Immigration Department says a person who has been legally and ordinarily resident for at least four years, or who has been married to an Antiguan and Barbudan citizen for at least one year, may apply for a resident permit subject to the applicable criteria.
Its current Residency Permit FAQ also lists several classes and qualifying situations:
- work-permit holders / general residence — commonly described as Class A;
- marriage — Class B;
- students — Class C;
- entrepreneurs or investors — Class D;
- homeowners / retired residents — Class E; and
- persons of independent means — Class F.
Successful resident permits are generally issued for one to three years, with the FAQ saying three years is normal unless a shorter period applies. Renewal should be requested three months before expiry.
Because the same official FAQ contains inconsistent timing language for some financially independent categories, ReloTide does not invent a universal minimum stay. Confirm the current class-specific requirement directly with Immigration before relying on a filing date.
Digital nomad visa: closed in 2026
Antigua and Barbuda's NDR programme previously allowed qualifying remote workers to live in the country for up to two years while working for foreign employers or clients. The official criteria included age 18+, foreign employment, at least US$50,000 annual income, clean criminal record, insurance and supporting documents.
The official application page now says: “This program ends November 15, 2025.” The programme homepage also displays that it has ended. That makes the old NDR unsuitable as a new 2026 application route.
Remote workers should not simply enter as tourists and assume they can replicate the former NDR status. Read the closed Antigua digital nomad visa/NDR guide and confirm current Immigration rules for your intended activity.
Citizenship by investment is citizenship, not investor residence
Antigua and Barbuda's active Citizenship by Investment Programme is administered by the Citizenship by Investment Unit. It offers direct citizenship, subject to due diligence and approved funding options. Current official minimums include:
- US$230,000 National Development Fund contribution;
- US$300,000 approved real-estate investment, held for at least five years;
- US$1.5 million sole qualifying business investment, or a qualifying joint investment structure; and
- US$260,000 University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus Fund contribution for the specified family category.
Those amounts are not residence-investment thresholds. They belong to a nationality programme with separate processing, due-diligence and passport fees. See the Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment guide.
Tax residence is a separate analysis
Immigration permission does not by itself settle tax residence. Antigua and Barbuda's Income Tax legislation includes a 183-day physical-presence test alongside other residence tests, while the Inland Revenue Department administers current tax compliance.
The former NDR FAQ stated that NDR holders' income-tax affairs remained with their normal country of residence, but that programme has ended and should not be used as a blanket tax rule for other immigration categories. Anyone relocating should assess tax residence, business presence and cross-border income separately.
Which route fits which profile?
Foreign employee: start with the work permit. A later residence permit may become possible after the required lawful-residence history.
Spouse of an Antiguan and Barbudan citizen: review marriage-based residence. Marriage does not automatically erase the need to maintain lawful immigration status while eligibility is being built.
Student: use the student permit, which normally must be approved before arrival and does not provide general work rights.
Entrepreneur or investor operating locally: compare the investor/entrepreneur residence category with the separate work-permit rules.
Retiree, homeowner or financially independent resident: review the independent-means/retirement residence guide, especially the official timing inconsistency.
Applicant seeking nationality through investment: the CBI programme is a direct citizenship route and should not be marketed as a residence visa.
Practical planning checklist
- Confirm whether you need an entry visa before travel.
- Decide whether your activity is employment, study, residence, remote work, business operation or citizenship investment.
- Keep visitor permission valid while any Labour or Immigration application is pending.
- Do not rely on the closed NDR programme for a new 2026 remote-work filing.
- Use the current Immigration Department for residence class and fee confirmation where official web pages conflict or omit details.
- Budget separately for government fees, police certificates, medical evidence, insurance, document legalization and professional advice.
- Review tax residence separately from immigration status.
