Netherlands Digital Nomad Visa in 2026: What Actually Exists

The Netherlands does not currently have a dedicated digital nomad residence permit for a non-EU national who simply wants to live in the country while continuing remote work for an overseas employer or overseas clients.

The practical question is therefore not “How do I apply for the Dutch digital nomad visa?” but which real Dutch immigration category matches the work relationship?

EU/EEA/Swiss nationals

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a Dutch residence permit to live and work in the Netherlands. The IND states that they are free to work and do not need a TWV work permit.

This guide is mainly relevant to third-country nationals.

Remote employee of a foreign company

A foreign employment contract does not itself create Dutch residence rights. The Netherlands does not have a general residence category designed around arbitrary foreign-employer remote work.

A person joining a Dutch employer may qualify through the highly skilled migrant route if the employer is an IND-recognised sponsor and the salary and market-rate requirements are satisfied.

Other employer-sponsored work categories can exist depending on the facts, but they should not be relabelled as a digital nomad visa.

Freelancer or independent professional

A genuine independent professional may need the general self-employed residence permit. The ordinary route is demanding: the business generally must be of essential interest to the Dutch economy, RVO assesses the project, and freelancers must have one or more commissions in the Netherlands.

For 1 July–31 December 2026, the IND lists €1,766.77 gross profit per month including holiday allowance as the self-employed income requirement.

US or Japanese entrepreneur

Eligible US and Japanese nationals should compare the DAFT / Dutch-Japanese treaty route. This is still a self-employed residence framework, but the treaty rules are different from the ordinary RVO scoring route.

For most common business forms, the IND uses a €4,500 substantial-capital benchmark. A first-time treaty applicant who receives residence before registration/investment must complete Dutch Chamber of Commerce registration and the investment within six months.

Innovative founder

A beginning founder building an innovative Dutch business may qualify for the startup residence permit.

The route requires a reliable facilitator, an innovative project, an active founder role, a step-by-step plan and sufficient means. It is valid for a maximum of one year and cannot be extended as a startup permit; a successful founder normally transitions to the ordinary self-employed route if eligible.

Can I enter visa-free and work online?

Visa-free or short-stay entry should not be confused with a long-term Dutch residence/work authorization. Even where a person can physically enter the Schengen Area without a short-stay visa, that does not create a residence category for living indefinitely in the Netherlands as a remote worker.

For stays that amount to relocation, identify the proper residence purpose before planning the move.

Foreign clients versus Dutch clients

Client geography does not solve immigration classification by itself. The ordinary self-employed route looks at the actual Dutch economic activity and requires freelancers to have one or more commissions in the Netherlands. DAFT/Japanese treaty cases use separate treaty tests.

A person who is substantively an employee should not re-label the relationship as freelancing merely to fit a self-employed route.

Tax and social security

Immigration permission does not determine tax residence. Working habitually from the Netherlands can create Dutch personal tax, payroll, social-security, VAT or permanent-establishment questions depending on the arrangement.

The Dutch Expat Scheme (30% facility) is an employee tax facility with separate Tax Administration requirements. It is not a digital nomad visa and is not automatically granted by a residence permit.

Family

Family rights depend on the actual sponsor permit. The IND states that partners of highly skilled migrants are generally free to work. It also states that partners of self-employed permit holders can work freely, including as self-employed persons.

Do not assume family treatment until the underlying route is known.

Long-term residence and citizenship

General Dutch permanent residence normally uses a five-year consecutive lawful-residence baseline plus main-residence, income and integration conditions. Ordinary naturalisation also generally uses a five-year lawful-residence baseline, with additional residence-status, integration, public-order and nationality-renunciation rules.

A short stay or unsupported remote-work arrangement does not build the same immigration history as a qualifying Dutch residence permit.

Which alternative fits best?

FAQs

Is there a Netherlands digital nomad visa in 2026?

No dedicated residence permit currently exists for that purpose.

Can a US freelancer use DAFT instead?

Potentially, if the treaty conditions are met. DAFT is a treaty-based self-employed route, not a digital nomad visa.

Can a remote employee use the highly skilled migrant scheme?

Only if the actual Dutch employment structure meets that scheme, including a Dutch IND-recognised sponsor, employment contract, salary threshold and market-rate salary.

Is the startup permit a remote-work visa?

No. It is for a founder actively building an innovative Dutch startup with a facilitator and approved plan.

Does five years of remote work automatically lead to citizenship?

No. Dutch permanent residence and naturalisation depend on qualifying lawful residence and additional statutory conditions.
