Austria Visa and Residence Options in 2026

Austria does not have one general “move to Austria” visa. For third-country nationals, the main settlement system is built around the Red-White-Red Card, the EU Blue Card, purpose-specific residence permits for study and research, and family titles. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens use free-movement rules instead of the third-country residence-permit framework.

The legal category matters. A Job Seeker Visa is not a Red-White-Red Card; an employer offer does not automatically satisfy AMS; a student permit is not unrestricted work authorization; buying property does not create a residence right; and immigration residence does not decide Austrian tax residence.

Red-White-Red Card is a family of routes, not one test

Austria’s federal migration portal lists seven RWR Card groups: Very Highly Qualified Workers, Skilled Workers in Shortage Occupations, Other Key Workers, Austrian higher-education graduates, Regular Workers in Tourism/Agriculture/Forestry, Self-employed Key Workers and Start-up Founders. They do not share one universal points or salary threshold.

The Very Highly Qualified route requires 70 points and can begin with a six-month Job Seeker Visa. The shortage route and Other Key Worker route use 55-point thresholds, but only the latter has the 2026 statutory minimum of €3,465 gross monthly plus special payments and an ordinary labour-market test. Austrian graduates have no points test.

EU Blue Card

The Austria EU Blue Card has no points system. For 2026 the official salary threshold is €55,678 gross annually including special payments. The route requires a binding offer corresponding to the qualification and an AMS labour-market check. For specified ICT professionals and service managers, qualifying professional experience can substitute for the usual degree under the current rule.

Business and founder routes — not a golden visa

The Self-employed Key Worker route requires macroeconomic benefit extending beyond the business itself. A sustained €100,000 investment-capital transfer is one official indicator, alongside jobs, know-how/technology transfer or major regional significance. It is not a passive investment test.

The Start-up Founder route instead requires an innovative business, a coherent business plan, founder control, at least €30,000 capital with at least 50% equity, and 50 points.

Austria’s official migration framework does not publish a dedicated digital-nomad residence permit or a property-purchase “golden visa.” Remote work, property ownership or passive investment should not be relabelled as an Austrian immigration category.

Study and research

The Student residence permit uses age-based 2026 subsistence benchmarks of €777.58 monthly below age 24 and €1,308.39 above age 24. Employment is not automatic: an employer can seek an AMS permit for work up to 20 hours per week without a labour-market test, provided studies remain the primary purpose.

After qualifying Austrian studies, graduates may extend Student residence once for 12 months for job search or starting a business and then move to the graduate RWR route if they obtain a qualifying offer.

Researchers with an eligible hosting agreement can use the Settlement Permit – Researcher, normally issued for two years, with a later RWR Card plus option where conditions are met.

Family reunification

Family reunification depends on the sponsor’s status. Families of RWR Card and EU Blue Card holders commonly use the RWR Card plus and are not subject to the same quota treatment as every other family category. The official 2026 general reference rates are €1,308.39 for singles, €2,064.12 for married/registered couples, plus €201.88 per child, subject to the statutory living-cost calculation.

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a third-country Austrian residence permit simply to exercise qualifying EU free-movement rights. For residence beyond three months they document the right with a registration certificate, which must generally be requested within four months of arrival. After five years of lawful continuous residence they can obtain a certificate of permanent residence.

Long-term Resident – EU

For qualifying third-country nationals, Long-term Resident – EU is a later settlement stage rather than an initial visa. Austrian guidance states that it can generally be sought after five years of lawful uninterrupted settlement if the general conditions are met and Module 2 of the Integration Agreement is completed.

Fees and processing times

The current federal migration portal lists a €218 application fee across the RWR Card and several settlement titles discussed here, while the Very Highly Qualified Worker Job Seeker Visa is €195. Visa D, translations, legalizations and document costs can add to the application budget. No one processing-time promise applies to all Austria routes; AMS review, consular handling, residence-authority workload and case completeness can change elapsed time.

Austrian tax residence is separate

The Federal Ministry of Finance bases unlimited Austrian tax liability on a place of residence or habitual abode, not on the marketing name of an immigration permit. The ministry states that after six months of stay in Austria, unlimited tax liability applies in any event with retroactive effect; a dwelling available for recurring use can create residence earlier. Treaty rules can then matter where more than one country considers the person resident.
